An alternative to Kyoko's audition with the cell phone. I'm actually watching the anime for the first time now, I had only read the manga before. I got really upset about what happened to Kyoko and then wrote down this little thought.
Bold is the voice on the phone.
Italics describe Kyoko.
Regular is Kyoko talking.
Paraphrased: After I left I dated lots of girls. They all hated me and left. I realized you were the only one willing to put up with me which makes me want to be with you. Let's get back together and not talk about how much of a shit I was.
Answers the phone. Flicks hair impatiently but tears up a little. Notices tears and wipes them angrily. Squirms a little as she keeps listening. Sadness breaks through at his declaration of love, but her face becomes determined when he asks to start anew. She takes a deep breath, schooling her expression once more. Her brow, however, remains furrowed.
It sounds like you've grown a lot since you left. I'm glad you've decided to be more considerate to others.
Great! So when can I see you?
You can't.
What? I just said-
Listen. I sold our apartment I'm living somewhere (her voice breaks) else now. (Tears start.) There are people there who care about me. I haven't fallen in love again, but someday I will. I want a relationship based on trust and we are never going to have that.
C'mon baby don't say that. We're meant to be together, you know that. Listen, I'll take you to a nice restaurant, just us-
Thank you for your apology. Let's each do better in our next loves.
You're being ridiculous! No one else will want-
Her eyes widened in as the words hit her. She felt vulnerable, but her voice remained firm.
Good bye.
She hangs up on his protests. Pauses. Runs a hand through her hair. Covers her eyes with one hand. Takes a deep breath. Then a shorter breath. Shorter still. Sobs develop. She hugs herself and the phone and she cries freely. She stops when the president of LME collides with her pulling her in for a hug, bawling his eyes out. She awkwardly tries to comfort him without crossing professional boundaries, aware of the accusing stares of the other contestants.
Thanks for reading this random thought! It reminds me a little of Listen by Beyoncé.
