they sit next to
the smell of salt and blue
birds floating through clouds
overhead
the boy glances at the girl
beside him, tangled hair
falling into eyes
smiles for a moment
before remembering
the scratch that lies across his cheek
the girl looks into forever
into the sky of blue
she doesn't smile
because she knows
that they will not grow old
they will not have
a thousand days
to learn one another
to love each other
so she presses her heart into
his palm
and accepts his in return
and he smiles again
because he thinks that love
will last forever
so he twines their hands
twines their hearts

and he promises
with lips that taste of salt
that he'll love her
until he dies
and she tells him

they keep their promises
each holding the others heart

until a flash of green
