He needed to answer her; he needed to say once and for all that she made him smile when no one else could. But the words wouldn't come, and as the moments passed he saw the light in her eyes fade ever so slightly. Jake watched her pull up the facade of happiness that he had carefully broken down, piece by piece. He watched as she held the threads of her smile together. And he watched as she murmured goodbye and walked out of his front door forever.
