"Hello there!"

"Oh, I didn't know weirdoes like you have anything good enough to tell someone like me. I have someplace else to go to. Bye."

"Wait! I wanted to talk to you about something!"

"What is it about? Are you finally going to say there are monsters in your house and give us a nice snapshot for the newspaper?"

"No, Mattie, it's that..."

"Oh I know. You told Elena you like her. That's old news."

"No. It's a bit more complicated than that."

"Out with it then. I don't have all day to lose my reputation."

"I...like you."

She didn't like what she heard from outside the classroom, but it didn't make any sense ignoring it either. She only heard the last line, but the last line was all she needed to hear. That was Zick and Mattie. How could he say such a thing to her? It was disgusting!

"Elena!"

Now he's calling her. No way she'd put up with a liar like him. "Get lost, Zick!" she yelled, and walked on her own homeward.

"Wait, what's wrong with you?" asked Zick, trying to catch up.

Oh fine, tell him, if that's what he wants to hear. "What's wrong with me? Ask yourself first, what's wrong with you?"

"What is this about, Elena?"

No...when he said her name like that, she felt tingles down her spine. He always made it sound so special despite the mediocrity. And why he had that very look he was wearing—of course she couldn't resist.

"Elena? Tell me, please."

It wasn't an order, it was a request. Don't give in to him, don't look, don't listen. "Forget it."

"Wait! I have a little confession to make."

"Go ahead! Tell me you'll start dating her, and that you won't hang out with me anymore! Tell me you found a better best friend than me, someone you can trust with your secret! I don't want to have anything to do with you anymore!"

Elena walked ahead of him, making sure he didn't see her crying.

"Elena?" he called. When he said her name, she just had to turn around. "Listen, it's nothing like that. You heard me earlier, didn't you? It was supposed to be a little surprise, for both of you."

"Both of us?!"

"No, you don't get it. It's a little trick. You didn't think I'd seriously...'like' her, did you?"

"I heard you loud and clear. I don't need you explaining things to me."

"I need to explain this." He stepped closer to her. "Elena, I have a confession to make. It's that...."

He showed her a tiny black box with a ring inside. Her insides squirmed when she saw it.

"So you're proposing?" She started walking again.

He followed her. "No, I'm 'proposing'...a treaty between her team and ours. After this trick, they won't bother us again."

Should she even bother asking "How come"? She only shrugged. "I don't care."

Well, at least his plan worked. He proved what he was thinking of, he proved she had the capacity to be jealous of someone else. And what's more, he proved she liked the attention he'd been giving her.

He smiled deep inside. Tomorrow, he was taking her to the park after school, and there he'd tell her the real confession he was practicing.

The End.
