Pain. That's all there was. It burned, like a white-hot flame, a nuclear bomb, and a military tank all decided to go off inside my body at the same time. I couldn't move or scream. Was I alone? I wasn't sure. I hoped not.
It could have been seconds or years, but I felt something pain started to fade, and I was aware of other people around me. "I couldn't leave her to die, Edward." One voice said. Pleading. "He was killing her." Then I noticed there were no heartbeats.
Someone sighed. "I know." A male voice this time. Edward? I heard someone else walk in, bringing a sound like a bird with them. "How is she?"
"Her thoughts are clearer." Edward said. "She can hear us." The pain was gone, and my eyes flew open in shock.
The man was by my side instantly. "How do you feel?" I barely heard him. Everything was so clear! My memories seemed blurred in comparison. "What happened?" I asked, and my eyes widened. My voice sounded like singing. I sat up in confusion.
He hesitated. "What do you remember?"
I thought for a moment. "He almost killed me..."
He knew exactly what I meant. "Well my wife saved you. But... Well, How's your throat?"
Then I felt it. It felt almost like the fire had. "What is it?" I asked.
"You had to change a bit, or else you would be dead." He went on to explain that he and his family were vampires, but not in the normal sense. They only drank animal blood.
I just nodded, speechless. He explained that he could read minds, his wife Bella could shield her mind, and their daughter Renesmee could show people her thoughts. His sister Alice could see the future and her husband Jaspercould control the moods of people around him. He said that not all vampires had gifts. He also said that his family had a few guests over, and one in particular wanted to meet me. I nodded again and we headed down to the living room.
