The Rise of the Half-Bloods

Part I

Sweat was dripping down my face. My heart was pounding what felt like 100 times faster than usual. I quietly slipped behind a tree to stay out of sight. Martin, who I recently found out was a satyr (half goat, half human), was also hiding behind a tree about 17 feet away from me. Something really big, like a monster, was approaching us. On second thought, it was a monster. I didn't get a great look at its face, but I'm pretty sure it was a cyclops. I had learned about cyclopes from a book my dad had given me. He said it would help me when I was older. I thought he meant academically, but now I know what he meant. Martin signaled for me to go towards a small entrance way on the top of a hill. I waited for the perfect moment and started quickly but quietly heading towards it. Snap! I winced and looked down realizing I had stepped on a twig. The cyclops jerked his head my way and growled, revealing pointy yellow teeth and one blood-shot eye. The cyclops charged in my direction, and I stood there having not a clue of what I should do. Martin yelled from the tree, "RUN!" So, I sprinted. I ran faster than I had ever run in my life in the direction of the top of the hill with the cyclops close behind. Martin followed after the cyclops trying to distract him. He threw rocks, but most of them missed. Finally, he threw one that hit the cyclops right on the back of his head. The cyclops turned and advanced on Martin. Martin was fast. And I mean really fast. I went through the gate and kept bolting as far away from the cyclops as possible. Martin ran through and stopped, breathing hard and sweating like crazy. I turned around and yelled, "C'mon, Martin! He'll KILL YOU!" Martin looked at me strangely and then said, "Look at it. It can't get through." I stopped running and watched. Sure enough, he was right. I asked him, "How come?" He replied, "There's a magical barrier that protects us from monsters and all that other bad stuff. Only half bloods, gods, nymphs, satyrs, etc. can get through." He trotted over to me and said after taking a breath, "Welcome to Camp Half-Blood, Maggie."
