Skimming Rocks

Neville sat by the lake, watching the giant squid swim in lazy circles. He had never felt like suck a failure in his entire life, and considering the life he'd lived, that was saying something. He'd let his friends down, his gran down and most importantly, he'd let his parent's down.

She'd been right there. Right there and he'd done nothing because he was weak. He'd not been strong enough to avenge his parents and honestly, he was quite sure he never would be.

He threw a rock in the water, tilting his head to watch it fall in to the inky depths of the lake.

"They will be very proud of you, you know," a soft, lilting voice came from behind him.

"Hi, Luna."

"Hello Neville."

She stepped up beside him.

"You should know you did them proud, Neville."

"I failed. How could they possibly be proud of that?"

"You stood by your friend when he needed you and for what you believe in. How could they not?" she countered, bending to pick up the smoothest rock she could see.

Neville watched her skim the rock, counting the skips, four, five, six.

"You should be pleased and proud of yourself, Neville. You stood, with your head held high, against some of the foulest beings in our world, and you walked away from it. How many people can say that?"

Patting his arm gently, she stepped away, turning to wander her way back to the castle.

"Luna."

"Yes, Neville?"

"Thank you."

She just smiled and continued on her path, not seeing the echo of her smile on his face as he picked up another rock and watched it skip, four, five, six times.
