Honor Thy Father, Honor Thy Friend

Ryūji Suguro was sitting outside the temple, pondering. Okumura's words never left his mind. "I don't' know what's behind all this...but you'll regret it later! Got it? Now apologize to your father! You can't disown your own father!" At that moment, Ryūji had thought that Okumura had no idea what the hell he was talking about. He was angry that the demon was interfering in something that didn't even concern him. Then his anger had melted when the Impure King was defeated. He remembered being yelled at by his mother to check up on his resting classmates, and Ryūji remembered how peaceful Okumura looked when asleep. Sheimi, the girl who had first put faith in him after the incident, was sleeping beside him. He almost looks human, the burly teenager had thought as he continued to stare. The pointed ears Okumura had were obscured by his dark blue hair, and his mouth was closed so you couldn't see his pointed teeth. I remember telling him in our dire moment that he was my friend.

Ryūji remembered how the dark blued haired half-demon had looked at him with shock when he said those words. After all, Ryūji had been the most hostile to him once he and everyone else knew about Okumura's demon origins, and that he was the son of Satan. Now watching him sleep, Ryūji thought of how Okumura must have felt at that moment – to have a former friend acknowledge and accept for who he was. Because of his origins, Ryūji had figured that Okumura had no idea what it meant to hate his father – and how wrong he was. After exiting the room, Ryūji had noticed Okumura-sensei watching him closing, stating, "He did know what you were going through." Okumura-sensei told him that his niisan had shouted similar words to their adoptive father, Father Fujimoto. Ryūji had listened in shock as Okumura's twin brother continued to explain how his brother's callous words had caused Father Fujimoto had caused him to be momentarily possessed by Satan, and killing himself to save the half-demon. Okumura-sensei had left Ryūji at that point, leaving him to ponder what he had just heard. He was sitting outside of the temple now, watching the clouds drift by and the sun shining above his head.

"You can't disown your own father!" I never would have guessed he would've done the same to his own adoptive father. The young man thought about the secret his own father had kept from him, and of how he distanced himself from his family to protect them. If I had known the Impure King was underground all this time, would I have forgiven his faults more easily? Ryūji wasn't certain what to think of his father now. Sure, he had found out the truth he had wanted for so long, but he wasn't certain what place his father had in his heart.

"My older brother considers Father Fujimoto his father, as do I. You really hurt him when you told him again that he was Satan's son." Ryūji hadn't known Father Fujimoto that well. He had only heard about him in passing. He must have truly loved Okumura to give up his life up for him. The young man continued to think about the dark blue haired exorcist. He must regret his words every day. I see now why he lost control and screamed at me. I was about to throw away something that he would give anything to have back. Sometime ago, Ryūji would have paused if asked the question that the unruly and hotheaded Rin Okumura was his friend, and if he would die for his father. Now he knew the answers.

The Bible says to honor thy father. Ryūji couldn't help but smile at the thought of his father teaching him how to read the Bible as a child. It's missing something though.

Honor thy friend.

Ryūji stood and went to find his father.

I will never dishonor you again.
