Chapter One

A/N: I'm so nervous about posting this for several reasons actually. One, I've never done an AU story before and I have no clue how well I'm going to do. Two, I've been away from fanfiction and writing in general for about a year and a half and my writing may have gotten rusty. Anyways, I hope you enjoy.

The nervousness she felt increased as she saw that it was getting closer and closer to being her turn to walk. This all felt so surreal. Was she really graduating? Wasn't it just yesterday that she was a freshmen in high school? No, it had been four years. Four long, hard years paved with both joys and hardships. As she rose from her seat, she spared a glance at her best friend, Sango. She took a deep breath and started to walk towards the stage where she would receive her diploma. The moment was finally here. She, Kagome Higurashi, was graduating from high school.

As she walked, she spotted her family cheering and waving for her. She smiled back and waved, then returned her attention to the front. Her heart beat faster as it became her turn to walk across the stage. As they called out her name and she walked proudly to accept her diploma, all she felt was a sense of relief. All the late nights spent studying had paid off, and now she was ready to begin her life as a young adult. As she returned to her seat, she looked at her diploma in awe.

'This is actually happening', she thought to herself. 'I am officially a high school graduate.' It still felt dreamlike. Like she was on the outside looking in and this was someone else's life she was seeing. But, this was her life, and she was graduating. She felt so good about it all. Her life was just getting started, and there were countless opportunities out there for her. She was going to a prestigious college in America, New York University, and better yet still, she would be there with her best friend Sango Tazekawa. Life was good.

As all the fanfare subsided, and Kagome exited the stadium, in all of the chaos, she found Sango. She ran up to her and gave her a hug and congratulated her.

"It's finally happened! We're graduates!", Kagome exclaimed.

"I know! It felt like forever, especially with all of the late night study sessions and having to cram for tests.", Sango agreed.

Kagome giggled. "Exactly. I couldn't wait for it to end."

"Well it's over now."

"Yeah." Kagome sighed. "Well, I've gotta go now. I hear my mom calling for me."

The friends hugged again and said goodbye and departed the school grounds with their families.

When Kagome arrived home, she was hit with a wave of fatigue. All of the excitement and nervousness of the day had sapped all of her energy. She was ready to sleep.

She climbed into her bed, turned the light off, and quickly fell into the land of dreams, thinking that the future was so bright and she was ready to go embrace her future.

A/N: And there it is! I hope I didn't completely butcher that. Hope you enjoyed! Until next time!
