Every night, it is the same.

After having dinner, they settle into each others arms, quietly talking or watching TV, sharing each's day with the other, trading kisses, caressing skin.

Every night, she falls asleep before him and he watches her, TV be damned, as her chest rises and falls with each breath she takes.

He carries her upstairs to bed, tucks her in like he would a child, undresses, and slips into bed beside her.

And every night, they wake in the desolate hours past midnight to shouts and curses from underneath their window.

"I loved you with a-all I had!"

They don't move. Eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling.

". . . You said you would stay by my side forever, Kagome!"

Broken promises reach her heart and slowly, her tears begin to fall.

"Did you mean a single word you said to me . . . ? Do you even remember?!"

He turns to her in bed, bringing up a hand to gently wipe her tears. She grabs it, tightly; it is her lifeline. She turns her damp brown eyes to his golden ones.

'I love you.'

"Of course you don't . . . how could you, and still lie there beside him?" His voice breaks. "Of all the people in this world . . . did it really have to be him?"

He moves towards her to cup her cheek. Resting his forehead against hers, he brings his mouth to hers.

'I love you.'

"Love, trust, faith . . . family, blood, affection . . . they're all just words, in the end . . . you proved it."

His fingers graze the skin at her neck as he deepens the kiss. She still cries.

"Did it have to be him, Kagome . . . the only family I ever had, the only brother I knew . . . ?

Desperate, now, to block out the voices, she winds her hands into his silver hair, pulling him harder against her body.

"Did it have to be her, Sesshomaru . . . the only one to accept me, the only one to ever love me . . . ?

His hands move frantically over her body, touching her in all the right places, seeking sanctuary in the gasps and moans she lets outs, in the wild net of her ebony hair.

"Do you know that I loved you more than anyone, anything else?" The crash of a glass bottle breaking comes from outside.

Inside, she hurriedly unbuttons her gown.

"Both of you! I loved you both!"

He kisses the flesh that her cloth had preciously covered.

" . . . I still do. I still love you." A cracking laugh. "How's that for self respect?"

Her back arches upwards; he takes a shuddering breath, his head resting at her neck, trying to gain control in her heat.

From outside, a sob flies upwards, along with a broken whisper, and the tinkling of glass. ". . . You should have just killed me."

Every night, it is the same.

Outside, he sobs his pain into the motionless wind.

Inside, she screams her release into his mouth, both for the moment free from the voices inside and outside their heads.
