Drabble – Upset II
Hephaestion grumbled to himself as he walked towards his rooms. He had just attended another meeting with Alexander and the other generals. Assignments had been handed out and, as usual, he had received the bulk of work. Some of the luckier ones had even left the meeting with nothing at all to do.
He wondered where it was written that he had to do most of the work. There were many generals, he thought, why couldn't they do their share. He heard laugher coming from the floor below him and saw a few of the others who had not been saddled with any work. A frown covered his handsome face and he grumbled some more.
As much as he didn't like all the extra work, there was a part of him that was proud of himself for Alexander considering him worthy enough to be able to accomplish all that he did do. He knew Alexander depended on him for a lot and couldn't count on many of the others to do things the way he wanted.
But still…
He felt a lot of times that he was being taken advantage of in many ways. Alexander seemed to just take for granted that with him just asking Hephaestion things were going to get done quickly and efficiently.
By the gods, it just didn't seem very fair. Hephaestion had seen little 'fair' being spread around in his lifetime.
He finally reached his rooms with the echoes of the other generals' laughter still ringing in his ears.
He looked at the huge pile on his desk and then down to his arms full of even more work. Maybe he could just run away. He wondered how long it would take Alexander to notice.
Footsteps approached from the behind him and he turned to see Alexander approaching. He rolled his eyes and walked towards his desk saying a silent prayer that Alexander hadn't thought of anything else for him to do. Setting the scrolls down on top of the mess already on his desk, he watched as several fell to the floor.
"You should clean up your desk, it's really a mess." Said Alexander.
Hephaestion glared at him.
"Is everything alright Phai, you seem upset?"
"What if I told you that I don't want to do this anymore?"
"Then I couldn't go on." Alexander said seriously.
Hephaestion smiled and asked Alexander what he needed.
