Laura Cantil was sobbing in her colorful bedroom. Her best friend Daphnee had gotten married and moved away. The girls had been like sisters, and it killed Laura to see her go. But Daphnee loved her husband Keith and Laura knew she wouldn't have stayed anyway.
There were voices in the living room, her mothers, and two other voices she didn't know. Her mother poked her head into her room and gave her an exasperated look.
"Honey, come out here, Hannah Dearly is here and she brought her daughter Laurie!" Lilly Cantil, her mother, said. Lilly's face gave away her excitement even though she tried to act calm and cool. She used to be an actresse in Hollywood before they moved here and she still acted like she was famous by trying to be cool and act like she didn't care. It really bothered Laura sometimes, but she still loved her.
Laura walked down the hall into the living room. There was a woman talking with her mom and a girl about her age sitting on the couch. The girl turned and Laura was shocked. She looked so much like her! The girl told Laura her name was Laurie. Laura smiled a real, genuine smile and led Laurie out to the garden out back.
"Hey, sorry I'm acting rude, I just don't feel very good today…" Laura said, breaking the confortable silence and hoping Laurie would leave it at that. But she should have known better. After all, she would have wanted to know more too.
"What's wrong?" Laurie asked her quietly. She was afraid Laura would get mad for wanting to know when they had only met a few minutes ago. But she watched Laura's face, and she saw a hint of joy.
"My old best friend just moved away with her husband and now I'll never see her again," Laura said, happy to find that Laurie may actually care about her and not just her gossip. Laurie hesitantly walked over to her and hugged her. They pulled away, both smiling nervously. Side by side, they walked back to their mothers. As they were walking, Laura realized that she may have found a new best friend.
Later that night, Laurie and her mom Hannah were leaving. Laura and Laurie begged their moms to let Laurie stay over. It was Monday night, but they could just walk to school together the next morning. After much begging, the mothers agreed and Laura and Laurie ran off to the club house behind the main house. They stayed up late, watching movies and eating maceroni and cheese. They had wanted pizza, but maceroni and cheese was the only thing in the fridge in the club house so they settled for that.
"Hey," Laurie said when they were switching movies, "Why don't we have Mac and Cheese as our friendship food? It can be our special thing!" By the end she was jumping for joy. Laura laughed and agreed.
