The smile in the wall was closing. The last remaining thoughts of a soul that never lived, fading. Into the abyss he sank. Mere seconds felt like a lifetime as every tear fled from the drenched eyes of the girl who waited, until only one remained. One shimmering raindrop of despair. A single tear for a thousand memories that were soon to be forgotten.
Across the earth, across the sky, across a million galaxies that his presence had enlightened, a wave of desolation struck a million hearts like lightning. Nobody knew why. Nobody knew that the man who had saved them, the man who had given them hope, released them from agony, was now being irrevocably pulled from existence. Nobody knew him at all. Nobody, except one. One girl who refused to forget.
And as his life was gradually depleting; as hers was torn to pieces, she held on. She clutched the moments she had spent with him as tightly as the silence grasped his substance, his ripple on the universe.
''You have to forget,'' he whispered from only inches beyond.
Yet still she held on. Still her heart beat with enough passion to fill both of his.
''You have to forget.''
''No,'' she cried weakly. ''No. I won't. I won't forget.''
The silence that choked him was filling her ears with anguish.
''I'll never forget you, Amelia Pond. While you forget me, I'll always remember. I'll wait for you, like you waited for me.''
His whispers vanished as his two hearts beat for the last time, before never beating at all. Amy Pond sat alone on the cold, hard floor, her arms cradling a memory that never happened. As she stood, wiping a single tear from her blemished face, a sense of loss overcame her.
As she stepped away, pondering what she would never recall, a silent smile crept up on her.
