Starlit Eyes

Chapter 1

Prologue

The lone girl walked slowly through the forest, searching… She was always searching…

She knew she had next to no hope, even if she found what she was looking for, but she wouldn't give up. If she did then she really would have no hope.

She was dressed in a simple green kimono. It was cut so that it would not hinder her movement was she forced to run, and so that it would hide her curves. After all she was a young woman traveling alone. Her hair was a dark brown and held in a high ponytail to keep it out of her face. She refused to let it grow further than her breasts, but it would have still gotten in the way. And she didn't wear it in a bun of an elaborate topknot, as most other women of that time because she refused to be like every other woman.

She was pretty enough, though not remarkable. The thing about her that would separate her from the other women, besides her ponytail and rather loose kimono, was her eyes. They were a light purple color. Purple was uncommon enough among humans, but her eyes were so light and had speckles that seemed like stars, that they could be compared to the night sky.

As she went on her way she noticed a couple of men approaching her from the opposite direction. Oh, great. And they're cute, too. Here we go again.

"You better behave your self this time."

As they neared each other the men could see her holding her hand and seeming to be muttering to it.

The men looked at her strangely. She smiled.

"Excuse me? Could you please tell me how far it is to the next village along this road?" she asked in a clear voice.

The men looked at each other. The taller one answered. "About 3 miles."

Still smiling and gripping her hand in front of her, she bowed slightly and walked sideways around them, then walked away backwards. The men turned with her and watched her strange behavior. She looked at her hands and hissed something under her breath the men couldn't hear. She quickly looked up and smiled at the men again laughing a little. After she was about 15 feet away from them she turned and walked away.

After she was out of sight the men turned to each other and continued on their way.

"Was that girl just talking to her hand?" asked the shorter one of them.

The taller one shrugged.

"I don't know." And they continued on.
