Baby Mine
DCI Michael Jardine had seen a lot of things in his life, some of which he'd rather forget; but none of those experiences had prepared him for this moment. The moment that the nurse had placed the small blue bundle in his arms and congratulated him on the birth of his son.
His son.
He still couldn't get used to the idea that he was now a father; even now as he sat next to the bed that held the sleeping form of his wife, staring down at the sleeping face of the infant.
He was perfect, he decided. All of his tiny ten toes and fingers were accounted for – Michael had checked – he had two arms and two legs, just like any other baby. But this baby was different, this baby was his.
He shook his head in amazement for the umpteenth time since his son's birth. In all his experiences with small children throughout his career, including that with a small boy in a coffee shop, he had never imagined he would ever have a family of his own.
Especially not with the woman now fast asleep in the bed next to him.
He had taken her for granted in his life for so long that it had come as a shock when it seemed like he was going to lose her to someone else. He had moved swiftly after that, but still children hadn't really seemed to feature on his horizon.
Until the day she had come, more than a little apprehensive, to tell him the news. He had been so shocked that at first he'd been unable to say a word but then had hardly been able to contain his joy. He had spent the next few months walking on air. Much to his wife's amusement, mixed with consternation at how protective he became.
He looked up as the woman in question stirred; he smiled at her. "Hello Sleepy Beauty," he whispered, leaning across to kiss her forehead. She gave him a bleary eyed smile in return, "Did I miss anything?" she asked voice heavy with exhaustion as she tried to keep her eyes open.
"You should sleep," Michael admonished her gently, chuckling at the glare she shot in his direction, its effect marred by her drooping eyelids. "All right," he conceded with an indulgent smile, "no, you didn't miss much, Robbie and Stuart came by but since you were sleeping they said they'd come back tomorrow. They said all the appropriate things," he added with a twinkle in his eye as he watched her eyes slip back shut.
"Good," she muttered, as she once more drifted off to sleep. Michael chuckled softly as he leaned across and kissed her forehead once more, "I love you, Jackie," he whispered, watching as she smiled briefly in her sleep, turning slightly in the direction of his voice.
The baby stirred in his arms and he cooed softly to settle him, watching as he opened his blue eyes briefly to regard him before drifting back to sleep.
Michael smiled a contented smiled as he continued to watch over his sleeping wife and son.

Michael's emotions on holding the pink bundle were just as profound as they had been when he had first cradled his son. He looked up at Jackie and smiled.
"She's beautiful," he whispered so as not to wake his new daughter, Jackie smiled back at him.
The contented moment, however, would always have a comic sidenote to it as Jimmy, who had been quite content to sit on the bed with his mother, decided to see what all the fuss was about.
Both Michael and Jackie watched as the sandy haired toddler inspected the sleeping form of his baby sister before looking at his parents and announcing: "I don't want a sister, can I have a trumpet instead?"
His parent's answering laughter did not appear to be very promising.

A/N: Jimmy's line is something my friend said when she was little and presented with her little sister. I thought it kind of fit... :)
