Alicia in Flutterland

A wizard and a witch stood outside a classroom door, peering in the square window on the top of part of the door. The students within were all taking a test.

"That's her," said the wizard, pointing at a girl sitting at a desk, filling out her scantron.

"The Chosen One, huh? The only one who can save us?" asked the wtich, whose face had slash marks.

"Yes, Lavender. She's the only one."

"Well, we should tell her," the witch said, reaching for the door handle.

"No, we can't!" the wizard exclaimed, pulling her hand away. "She must find out gradually, or she might not want to help at all. Then where will we be? The fate of our world, of her world, of many, many worlds, rests on her shoulders."

"And that's why she ought to be told!"

"Look, Lavender, what would you have done if someone had come to Hogwarts and said, 'Lavender Brown, you are the only person in the entire universe who can save the world, that is, this world and so many others'?"

"I would have scoffed at them."

"Of course you would! Because it is unbelievable, until you realize that it must be, and you can't have that thrust upon you! Do you not see the danger of scaring her too early? Then she might off herself…it's like stepping into the Total Perspective Vortex, and everyone knows that the only person to survive thatwas Zaphod Beeblebrox."

"You know I have no idea what you're talking about, Euan. And I still don't know why you're willing to help me."

"Hey, we're both outcasts here. You because of your scars, and me because, well, people continue to say I shouldn't have been in Gryffindor."

"Well, hanging out with Draco Malfoy doesn't help your case."

"Draco is a decent guy since the war. Well, I'd vouch for him, at least."

"No one will take the word of a guy who invented the Hollyhorn Curse while he was in Hogwarts," Lavender said.

"But that curse proved effective against the Carrows!"

"You put on a Death Eater's cloak in the middle of the war, Euan."

"It was so I wouldn't be killed by giants or acromantulas! And anyway, I was underage! They should have been better at getting us young uns away from the battle; remember Colin Creevy?"

"How could I not? He jumped in front of a curse to save me. It ended up killing him."

"He jumped-"

"We were dating at the time," Lavender mused. "He wanted to be the only photographer to have legitimate pictures of the war…I lost my spirit in the fight after he was killed. That is how Fenrir almost killed me. I saw Hermione Granger come…for a second it looked like she'd let him slaughter me…she still hadn't forgiven me for dating Ron Weasley…but she saved me in the end."

"Well, we're going to need more than Hermione Granger to get us out of this fix."

The bell rang and Lavender jumped. "What was that?"

"It is a signal that there is a class shift. Which reminds me, time to Apparate." Euan grabbed Lavender's arm, and they vanished into thin air.

The girl whom the wizard had pointed out emerged from the classroom, an image of a fifth generation Pokemon on her shirt, which she had made on a website. It was a floating lantern-like creature, and beneath it was a small image of a mostly blue creature with yellow ball hanging from its head.

"Hey, nice shirt," said a guy who noticed it in the hallway.

"Thanks," she said, grinning.

"Lampent and Lanturn are…"

But he was swallowed by the crowd, and the girl didn't get to hear the rest of what he was going to say. But whatever it was, the fact that he knew what Lampent was thrilled her alone. Most teenagers acted like Pokemon didn't matter anymore, but she knew that they did, and always would…all 649 of them at the current time, and all the future ones to be released.
