Since time began, our world has been a battlefield for two great titans. One was made entirely of stone and plant life, and was known as the Bionis. The other titan, a massive behemoth of metal, was known as the Mechonis. Nobody knows what caused the two titans to begin fighting, but their war lasted for eons.
The two titans were perfectly matched in power, and were incapable of needing food or sleep. Even when the Mechonis had its arm chopped off by the Bionis, it still continued fighting. It seemed like the battle would never end- but one day, the two titans swung their blades at the same moment, and both struck their target, killing both titans instantly.
Since that moment, the Bionis and Mechonis have remained completely still, and life began to build atop their lifeless bodies. Our race, the Homs, grew upon the Bionis, living relatively peacefully alongside the other races that grew upon it. The Mechonis, however, began growing its own life- slightly less organic life.
The creatures formed on the Mechonis came to be known as the Mechon, and while they did occasionally wander a bit close to the Bionis, they simply remained a nonhostile- yet terrifying- race. That is, until the Titan's War.
At one point, the Mechon came en masse onto Bionis, and began slaughtering all the living creatures they could find. The Homs fought back with all their might, but the Mechon's only weakness was ether, the building block of Bionis-based life in its purest form- and no weapon on Bionis could harness that power.
Until a group of Homs explorers discovered the very sword that the Bionis had used in the original battle between the two titans. It was dubbed the Monado, after an ancient word meaning "titan". Testing soon went underway to harness the power of this blade. Unfortunately... things went a bit haywire. Almost everyone who tried using the Monado couldn't control the massive output of ether energy, and were forced to drop the blade. Some brave soldiers never recovered, and suffered permanent physical or mental trauma.
Only one person was capable of withstanding the Monado's power- a veteran warrior named Dunban.
