'They' said Clinton Francis Barton was a man with a sketchy past, full of things he'd rather forget. Clinton Francis "Hawkeye" Barton earned a name for himself in SHIELD and beyond for being a loner, isolated and lethal. Clinton Francis "Hawkeye" Barton was the man SHIELD sent on missions that they didn't think anyone would return from because he himself doesn't matter, or at least that's what 'they' said.
Clinton Francis "Hawkeye" Coulson knows that only some of that was true; he was lethal but not always as isolated as 'they' seemed to think and as for the missions, he always had the backup that really counted and the knowledge someone wanted him back. The difference between them is Clinton Francis "Hawkeye" Coulson is a man with a future that he's happy with.
