Futile Efforts
by

(I will dedicate and sacrifice my every-thing
for just a seconds worth of how my story's ending
and I wish I could know if the directions that I take
and all the choices that I make won't end up all for nothing)
Yami knew he would sacrifice everything for his aibou. But it just...just...he needed a life of his own! All he knew was Yuugi's friends, Yuugi's family, Yuugi's life.... He was beginning to think that Yuugi and him were one now. 'I mean we've always shared the same body, but I've always been the stronger one. But I suppose it doesn't matter...nothing matters when you don't even know who you are.'
(Show me what it's for
make me understand it
I've been crawling in the dark
looking for the answer)
Yami came home from school and laid his...no...Yuugi's backpack on the table and headed upstairs. He needed to think. His sworn duty was to protect his friend, no matter what, no excuses. But he felt a longing for something more, something he didn't have. An identity...
(Is there something more
than what I've been handed?
I've been crawling in the dark
looking for the answer)
"Yuugi?" Yami called to his other self. "Yes?" a voice answered. "We need to talk." They met in a corridor of his mind, considering only one could be present at a time on the outside. "Yuugi...I've been thinking." He struggled for the right words. "I don't know anything about myself. I've- I've been living your life for the past year. It's time for me to go."
(Help me carry on
assure me it's ok to
use my heart and not my eyes
to navigate the darkness)
He watched as his aibou's face crumbled into confusion. "What are you saying, Yami?" Yami paused. Should he really do it? Yes...there was no future for him here. If only he could regain those forgotten memories... Yami pulled out a gun from underneath his robes. How could've Yami be this depressed without his knowledge? 'I guess I've been ignoring him lately.' But then again that wasn't possible. 'He and I are one.' Would he do it? No, no, no. He can't! And leave him all alone?
(Will the ending be
ever coming suddenly?
will I ever get to see
the ending to my story?)
"What are you saying?" Yuugi asked as if he didn't understand the situation. Yami said nothing, he just put the gun on the floor and slid it over to Yuugi. Yuugi just stood staring at it for a moment, and picked it up. "Yuugi...you would be doing me a great favor. Please," he said with pleading eyes "...just shoot me."
(So when and how will I know?
How much further do I have to go?
and how much longer until I finally know?
cause I am looking and I just can't see what's in front of me in front of me)
Yuugi gasped as Yami repeated his command. "Do it.' "No." "Do it!" "NO! HOW COULD ASK ME SOMETHING LIKE THAT?!" "JUST DO IT, DAMMIT!"
Tears welled up in Yuugi's eyes. He knew Yami would have what he wanted, one way or another. There was nothing he could do. He tried pleading with him but his efforts were futile. It was quiet in the corridor, except for Yuugi's muffled sobbing. After a long period of silence Yami bent down to pick up the gun. He stared into his hikari's eyes and squeezed the trigger. "NO!" The gun was wrestled out of his hands in time for the the bullet to hit another target.......Yuugi. Yuugi's body jerked back with the blow and landed beside Yami. All he could do was watch in fear. He was the one supposed to be on the floor...not him......not his hikari. Yuugi gave up his life for him. For him. And who was to say he was the stronger of the two?
