A rose is a rose

Do you ever question your name? Or is it a given fact that your name is truly yours? I have no such assurance for my true name remains unknown even to me. Instead I am called by the name of a dead man.
Isn't it funny how different you are from the person others believe you to be? Truly ironic in my case. To others, I am nothing more than a cold, distant shadow. But, inside I am someone else entirely.
I walk along the ruins of an ancient temple nearly destroyed with the colony years ago. Grasses and trees have grown in place of the city surrounding. Shattered glass lies on the bronzed stones of the old road as rose petals flow through the perfumed air. I stand in the shade of a cheery blossom tree, undisturbed in the heat of a summer day.
Clouds roam the open skies, free of boundaries. At times, I wish I could be more like the clouds. Perhaps then I could tell Duo how I feel. I could tell him I love him and have the confidence not to care of his answer. But he is too beautiful to love me. I could never love Duo the way he deserves. And even if I could, I see the way he looks at her. At Hilde. How could he love another with the way he looks at her? Perhaps it is only my insecurities that make me see the lust in his eyes. But that look gives rise to a feeling of jealousy and hate inside of me.
Another figure approaches trying to sneak up behind me, but I turn to face him. Duo stands in the center of the temple road, smiling.
"What ya' doin' out here by yourself?"
"Thinking" I reply, harshly.
"You think too much."
"Maybe you think too little."
I walk to the center of the road opposite Duo.
"It does me well. I've never had to confront my past."
"My past. is not of interest."
"Bullshit. I see it in your eyes. Sorrow that is not seen in the eyes of a man who knows his past."
"In any case, my past is not your business."
"And if I told you I knew your name?"
"Do you?"
"Perhaps. Why would you need to know such a trivial thing? You should have no need for closure. Are you not the perfect soldier?"
"A name holds so much truth. My name is neither Heero Yuy nor The perfect soldier. And with my name I have lost my identity."
"Ah.but Heero..."
He steps towards me, closing the gap between us to stroke my cheek.
"A rose is a rose by any other name."
I feel his breath on my lips as he leans in closer. Before Duo reaches my lips, I push him to the temple wall.
"And its thorns can cut you,"
He looks to the ground as I lift his chin to look into his eyes, "Just the same." I whisper softly, my lips brushing his ear.
Duo leans closer as his lips meet mine in a harsh kiss of sheer lust. I turn and run, while Duo stands pensive in the aftermath of our kiss. I don't know why I ran. It was on impulse. He wanted this and so did I, didn't I? Now that I had assurance that he felt for me as I did him, I had no excuse to run.
Hiding in the shadows of the forest, only the soft, rhythmic pattern of the waterfall accompanies my breathing. Sitting on a rock overlooking the water, I reply the day's events in my minds eye. Duo. I love him but only I know it. Or perhaps that kiss was enough to convince him of how I feel. I'm not ready to tell him, I don't know how. But if I know he loves me, why keep running? What am I afraid of?
I don't know when I fell in love with him, or why. Maybe it's the way his hair flows or maybe it's the way he smiles. But somehow. I think it's something deeper. Leaves crunch as someone walks towards me, tripping as they climb up the rocks. I know its Duo, but I feel no need to run, or even to move. I only wait. He wraps his arms around my waist from the back.
"Why do you run? You know I love you. And I know you love me."
I pull him into my lap.
"Nothings worth having unless you work for it, love."
