Author's note: I love Evanescence and their new song What You Want. And I thought it would be really sweet for Blaine to sing it to Kurt. This is sort and sweet. Hope you enjoy! Happy reading!
What You Want
A Klaine Fanfiction
By Danielle Cheri
Kurt was so happy to finally be home for Christmas break. His fall break had been packed full of busy work around the house that Carole had told Burt he couldn't do.
Blaine had gone from one end of Ohio to the next visiting distant family and friends he hadn't seen since he was a baby who all said, "Look how big you are!" and "My how you've grown since the last time I saw you!" and "My goodness, I bet you have to fight off the girls."
With all of that, Kurt had barely had two minutes to see Blaine. They talked on the phone all the time. But it wasn't the same. They wanted time together.
So Christmas break was a blessing. As a college student, Kurt was glad for the entire month away. Finals had been brutal and all he wanted was to curl up on the couch with Blaine and watch a movie. And maybe make out a little.
It took a little convincing with Mr. Figgins, but in the end Kurt was allowed to shadow Blaine in his classes. He spent that day back at McKinley following Blaine around like a lost puppy.
At the end of the day, they went to the choir room.
Blaine looked at Kurt critically and said, "Something's wrong."
"Why does anything have to be wrong?"
"Because you're sulking and broody. And, while I do like a handsome, brooding man, it hurts my heart to see you like this. Talk to me."
He took a breath and let it out. "I'm feeling burnt out and useless."
Blaine sat down at the piano and started picking out a slow tune. "You're not useless."
"But I feel like I am. I feel like a talentless loser."
"Why?"
"Because I never get solos."
"You're a freshman."
"I'm starting to feel like it's more than that."
He said nothing as he continued to play.
"I might quit." He said softly. "Find something practical."
Blaine slammed down a chord. Then he started playing a faster song. He belted,
Do what you, what you want
If you have a dream for better
Kurt smiled as his boyfriend growled out the song. Blaine's normal song choice being Top 40, it was interesting to hear him singing Evanescence. And as he really listened to the words being sung to him, he understood why Blaine had learned it. It was very empowering.
He belted out the lines with more intensity every time they said something he seemed to find particularly important. He looked Kurt straight in the eyes when he sang,
Every hour slipping by
Screams that I have failed you
It kept on going, building to a glorious climax. The chords and notes soared and bounced off the walls in complicated and twisting beauty.
And then the room suddenly went quiet as he dropped to pianissimo and he almost whispered,
Hello, hello, it's only me
Infecting everything you love
The next lines soared into a glorious crescendo. The rest of the song crashed around them until Blaine hit the final chord and called out the last line,
Do what you, what you want
He walked over to Kurt. "Don't give up on your dream. Your time will come."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah." Blaine pressed a soft kiss to his lips just before the rest of the New Directions walked in.
