It's Christmas time again and the second to last day before break, and even though Abed doesn't celebrate the holiday, his friends still get together with each other and their respective families. When Troy invites him over to not-celebrate Jehovah's Witness style, he declines. He has to go home and support his mother. It hasn't been the same at home since his sister's death; she needs him for support. That's kind of when they started watching Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer; something to take their minds off of things.
"Maybe next year," Abed promises with a hand slap to Troy.
He knows he won't show up next year either. Watching your sister die on a hospital table with tubes stuck into her and blood spilling out of her kind of makes a person not feel much in the way of celebrating.
He prays for her soul and his as he falls asleep.
He wakes up a clay man.
