"Mine, I believe." He took the hat from her head and twirled it in his fingers before placing it on his head, taking the umbrella slowly from her loose grasp.
She smiled and looked up to him. "Let's go home."
He frowned slightly, worried about what she might mean. "Home?"
She grinned, and stood. "The TARDIS."
"Ah."
She linked her arm into his and they headed off down the hill, falling into step beside each other.
"Professor, back there…what happened?" The Doctor glanced down at his shoes and sighed.
"I had to destroy the link. Between you and that planet. The curse was still inside you. You were possessed by power." He sighed. "Such a great power. It would have burnt through you. He was the link. He was controlled by the Master, and the Master didn't know that by destroying him, he was also slowly cutting away at the ties between you and that planet."
"But how, Professor? I mean, how does it affect me? Why did it affect me?"
"Ace, you were fighting it. There was something that I said to the Master that parallelled you." He closed his eyes.
They were circling. Time Lord on Time Lord. The Doctor's TARDIS was behind, the Doctor swapping directions so as not to let the Master close to the doors.
"They always did say opposites attract" he murmured softly to his opponent, and was torn away to the planet, fire erupting around him.
The Doctor jumped at Ace's touch.
"You drifted off for a second Professor." He looked at her quickly.
"What? Oh right. Opposites attract." He murmured. "He was bound to the Masters command, and for some reason, I was bound to you. Opposites." He placed one finger over the other. "I had to defeat the opposite to cut the ties." He sighed. "The last fragment was the connection between Earth and the Masters…creation."
Ace's eyes were generating tears.
"Oh Ace, Shreela had to die. It was best for her anyway. That wasn't a life! It cut the ties completely, just with one quick movement. Good, against evil." Confusion still clouded her eyes.
"How did you live though? I saw the explosion. I thought you were dead." She looked at him and sighed. He gave her a weak grin.
"I'm old enough and tough enough to escape a motorbike crash Ace." He smiled and raised his eyebrows, tapping his nose.
They stopped, the blue box sitting quietly on the street corner as the Doctor fished out the TARDIS key. He opened the door and held it for Ace.
"Ready for Time and Space?"
She grinned and paused. "Professor?" She glanced up at him, her smile growing. "Do you always sacrifice yourself for your companions?" She winked and ran through the door.
