Where the Figs Lie

He stood at the base of best friend's grave. Melchior shifted one spot to the left and gazed upon the headstone of his first ever lover, and the woman who carried his child. Melchior Gabor made the long journey home from boarding school, hopeful of reuniting with the two people closest to him. His best friend committed suicide after being kicked out on the street for failing out of school. The love of his life and the only person he was ever intimate with, dead due to a failed underground abortion.

A hand grasped his shoulder, and he jumped in shock. There stood Ilse, the girl who once pined, after Melchior's best friend, Mortiz, with a handful of beautiful yellow lilies.

"He was the only boy I ever loved. Quirky, odd, jumpy Moritz Stiefel," whispered Ilse. With those two in the cemetery, the four who ran back to Ilse's house to play pirates were joined together again.

"The only ones we were ever close to, dead. Do you know what it's like to invest your soul, your life in someone, only to discover that you were eventually the death of them," Melchior ranted angrily.

"I was with him that night. Did you know that? I had the opportunity to help him, to maybe persuade him out of his depression. I guess I just wasn't enough for him to stay," Ilse stuttered out, as she began to cry on the shoulder of Melchior. "Why us, Melchy? Is this some cruel trick by the Gods?" inquired Ilse.

"There is no God, Ilse. You must know this now. We cannot rely on some false higher being created by fools to reassure their own selfish acts. The only people we can rely on in this world is each other, it's you and I, Ilse." Melchior looked down and saw the crooked smile through the tears on Ilse's face. It was one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen.

Melchior whisked away a strand of hair, and gazed into the eyes of the rebellious adolescent who shared the same ideas as her. He leaned in and began to kiss her neck and slowly worked his way up to her luscious lips.

Then, before any rational decision could be made, Melchior and Ilse were rolling amongst the graves, sharing a passionate moment. Their lips intertwined as they discarded all inhibitions and shared a moment of love.

"Wait! Melchior, I don't want to end up like Wendla, I don't want to be with child!" worried Ilse aloud.

"Disregard your earthly concerns. Let us become one as lovers if only for one night. It's how Moritz and Wendla would want it. Please be with me. You have no idea the bliss that comes with joining bodies with another person and experiencing the ecstasy of physical love," shared Melchior seductively.

She nodded in agreement, and with that, their bodies became one, and Moritz and Wendla were just a distant dream.
