"Sonic!" Amy ran across the path as Sonic was battling a large monster within a ruined temple cavern. She continuously called Sonic's name as she ran; all whilst dodging the falling debris as parts of the cavern fell. Sonic was winning, which wasn't a surprise. But there was something about the battle that gave Amy a sinking feeling she couldn't shake. A look of pure despair was on her face, tears forcing themselves out of her eyes; making it hard for the young girl to see. Amy stopped as she got to the cliff overlooking the entire battle; the one her friends were all at. She fell to her knees in tears, making everyone around her worry.

"Amy what's wrong?" Tails crouched beside her, "Look Amy! Sonic will win this!" He cheered in an attempt to make her feel better. But with a single look from her face, Tails understood that there was something going on. His smile grew to a serious frown. Everyone grew solemn as they understood. Sonic was winning yes, but there was something about the fight that was off.

"SONIC" Amy gave one final cry as Sonic was struck by the monster; flying towards a ledge below her. He landed gruffly, his face on the ground and his limbs slightly numb from the shock of the landing. As he tried to get up Amy immediately leapt from the cliff unto the ledge; crawling to Sonic with desperate tears. "Sonic don't do this you can't…." Amy's words were almost incoherent from her sobs but she managed to speak as clearly as she could. Sonic slowly pushed himself onto his knees with his hands, his head turning to face his pink friend.

"Heh, You've figured me out." He smirked but stopped when he saw the expression on Amy's face. Sonic dusted off his gloves before cupping Amy's face with his hands; wiping her tears with his thumbs. "Why the long face Ames? I'm gonna win this aren't I? There's no need to cry."

"But Sonic, you…"

He chuckled, "You sure know a lot about me. Don't tell me it's that girlish intuition of yours?" He lifted Amy's face to what was once a blue sky. "Chin up Amy. Don't you want to see this world be beautiful again?"

"Of course I do Sonic! But without you I—" Amy grasped Sonic's arms, "I can't ever imagine a world to be beautiful without you in it!"

"Me neither." Sonic watched her with a small smile. After years of watching her fight time and time again; chasing him and bouncing back. No matter how often she was kidnapped or needed saving it never wavered her. Sure she could be aggressive and a bit much but she had many good points. He noticed that from her, but he admired her for the courage she had to follow him to even the very ends of the universe; for the courage to face whatever the world threw at her and fight for what was important to her. Sonic knew she would never doubt him, that she would entrust the entirety of herself to him. He knew she would choose him over everything. But even with what he felt for her, he could not choose her. Not yet. Not while everything rested on his shoulders. He watched as Amy's eyes widened at Sonic's response. But he could tell her heart sank from the expression he gave her. Sonic pulled Amy's head close and leant his forehead against hers. What he was going to say was not easy, but he had to. For her sake.

"I'm afraid I can't choose you right now."

The tears began to flow down Amy's cheeks once more as she heard those words. She knew all along; despite her decision to love him, that he was indeed a hero with countless responsibilities. Each and every one being for the good of the world they live in and beyond. Sonic throughout the years was always the chosen one; as if the fates decided that he was the one to keep the peace of existence itself. Amy wanted to curse, beg, fight; anything to change Sonic's fate, anything that would make it so that he stayed. She wanted to tell him not to leave but it was not in her power. She just had to fall in love with him all those years ago. But yet, she had no regrets. She wiped her tears, realising the exact words he chose when he told her them. "Right now?" She asked curiously, a small light of hope in her heart. She didn't want to just assume what he might have meant.

Sonic released his hold on Amy and removed her hands from him. He stood up and faced the monster; which was idle, as if mocking him for what was about to happen. He turned to Amy and winked, "I'll have to talk to you about that later." Sonic then released the chaos emeralds and rose into the air, transforming into Super Sonic and lighting everything with a bright golden light.

Amy shielded her eyes as the light hit her, only lowering her arm when the light dimmed. She watched as Super Sonic flew towards the monster, the final part to the final battle. But she knew it was not just the monster's final battle. The thing was she discovered the truth about the monster during Sonic's adventure. She knew what the battle would cost.

"Sonic you liar!" She called out in frustration; more tears falling from her eyes. She almost could've sworn Sonic smiled as he fought; as if he heard her clearly. "Don't do this to me!" Amy crumbled into a small ball on her knees and sobbed into her hands. Her shoulders heaved and her chest ached and her head throbbed, even though she knew Sonic would go through with it despite knowing the cost it hurt her. Pained her to the point she almost forgot how to breathe. Throughout the journey she tried to prepare herself for it; tried to convince Sonic against it even, but to no avail. It was pointless. He was the hero, and Amy knew he that would be his role to the very end.

As the battle began to draw to a close Amy lifted her head and stood up, she cupped her hands around her mouth. If the fight before her was going to be the last she saw of Sonic the Hedgehog, she might as well tell him.

"I LOVE YOU SONIC AND I ALWAYS WILL." Amy sobbed as she shouted out her words, putting all of her heart into each and every syllable. "Don't you dare think that for one second that I will forget you! You will always be my hero!" She fell to her knees once more; watching as her hero flew around the monster dealing the final blows.

From above her, she could hear the sounds of her friends shouting their own words at Sonic. While not the same as hers, she could hear them shout things about Sonic returning and the like. She didn't know whether to laugh or cry at the irony. "I can't make you promise," She murmured to herself, "Because I know you will probably never come back." Everything became a blur as the monster was defeated; Super Sonic hovering over it with the chaos emeralds. He began to chant but Amy could only hear his voice buzz.

It was a ritual to seal a monster that destroyed fate, but it required a great sacrifice; a sacrifice from the fates and as a hero with so much of the fates tied to him, Sonic was the only choice. Amy could've cursed Sonic's fate at that point, but she was too weary to even close her eyes. The chaos emeralds began to spin around Sonic, draining the Super Sonic power from him. The entire cavern glowed.

The circle of emeralds grew wider and wider until it soon surrounded the monster as well. Sonic continued the chant without hesitation. He knew his friends were watching, he knew Amy was watching. But he couldn't look back. He couldn't afford to. Everything needed to seal the monster required all of his attention but he couldn't help but think about how everyone would feel. But it was too late, he made the firm decision to seal the monster himself. Sonic took a deep breath, at the very least he could hear the voices of those he cared about. Though it made him sad. He thought about Amy, it was a shame. She would never know what he would tell her if he returned. As he returned his focus onto the ritual he silently couldn't help but feel that everything prior was so far away. But his feelings were interrupted by a figure across him. His eyes widened. But before he could properly react the ritual was completed.

Sonic and the monster were gone in a flash of light.

As the light abruptly left and the chaos emeralds fell to the bottom of the cavern, everyone grew silent. Tails flew to the ledge below the cliff, only to find Amy hunched over. "Amy?"

He was taken aback by the sheer volume of Amy's tears. But he couldn't blame her, no one could. Tails found himself full of tears at the loss of someone who was a brother to him. He walked over to Amy and placed a hand on her back; the two overwhelmed with grief.

Knuckles on the other hand quietly glided towards the chaos emeralds. As he gingerly picked them up he hastily wiped his eyes with his glove. He wasn't going to cry over a stupid hedgehog. Even though he grew to be an important comrade of his. No, not at all. No tears. Knuckles wiped his eyes. He couldn't lie to himself about that. But then Knuckles took a few deep breaths before stopping any potential tears. With Sonic now gone, he had to at the very least take care of the ones closest to him. It was the least he could do. He picked up all the emeralds and made his way to the ledge where Amy and Tails were. He gently tapped their shoulders, "Come on, we should go." Knuckles spoke quietly, knowing how much the situation affected them.

As Amy and Tails looked at Knuckles, the red echidna sighed. They weren't going to budge any time soon. "Look I.." He rubbed the back of his head, "I know it's hard. But he's not gonna be gone forever." Knuckles crouched in front of the two younger ones and placed a hesitant finger over each of their hearts. "He's there isn't he? And he will always be remembered. He's Sonic the Hedgehog, he's not immortal sure. But it would take a lot for him to be completely gone." Though Knuckles said those words, he knew it would take a very long time before either of the two could move on.

Tails nodded his head while Amy only looked at the ground. Knuckles scratched his head, unsure of how to deal with the situation. The two were usually so positive and optimistic, but then Sonic was mostly the source of that. Sonic never failed. But neither of them could've imagined success meant losing him. Knuckles picked the two up by their arms and walked over to the wall of the ledge. "Let's just get out of here first okay? It wouldn't help if we accidentally lose someone else over this." He began to climb up to the cliff as Tails picked up Amy and flew. When they all were on the cliff Knuckles turned to the two.

"Go home, both of you." He said; causing both Tails and Amy to be surprised at the gentleness of his voice. Knuckles grew slightly flustered, "Just, go home and rest. You need it." He began to walk away from them, "I don't know what you'll do from now on, but I know this. I'll keep fighting. He'd want me to." Knuckles then left the two to themselves.

"I think," Amy was the first to speak, "I'll keep fighting too. Sonic never slowed down for anything. He was always moving. I didn't want to even imagine a world without him," She gave a teary smile, "But he fought for this world. He fought for everyone's worlds. He just fights for everything, against every evil. I can't follow him this time, but I can follow what he did." Amy reached a hand out and grasped at the now clear blue sky.

"You're right Amy." Tails wiped his tears, "Sonic would never want us to mope about over this. Let's do what we can." Even though he wiped his tears, they still kept flowing. Tails found that Amy was the same.

"Tails!" Amy hugged him while crying, "I didn't want him to go!"

"I know…I didn't either." Tails replied. "But he went anyway."

The two continued to cry, even as the sun began to set. Neither of them ready to let go of the one thing they relied on. The one thing that was always around no matter what. They were not prepared to have to live without him, but now they had to. Not even the fates could choose him anymore. Maybe.
