"Here." Gojyo mutters, dropping a small package in Hakkai's lap. He looks up at the red-headed kappa, a slightly surprised look on his face.
"What is this for?"
"It's Christmas, ain't it?"
"But. . . I don't have anything for you."
"Forget it." Gojyo waves the apology off, turning back to his table.
Hakkai looks at the man who was presently taking care of him as his wounds, both physical and emotional, healed. "Thank you."
Again Gojyo's hand waves in the air. Hakkai can see the thin trail of smoke floating up from in front of Gojyo and shakes his head, a smile on his lips. He looks down at the package in his lap, cocking his head slightly when he sees the wrapping job. The festively coloured paper looks like it has been rolled around the gift inside then taped. A red ribbon is tied around the outside, ending in a sloppy bow. "You wrapped this yourself, did you not?"
"What of it?"
"You need to take a class in how to wrap presents."
"Oh, like you could do better?" Gojyo doesn't turn around and Hakkai shakes his head, deciding not to say anything. He unties the ribbon, then pulls the paper off, a smile crossing his lips when he sees the gift inside. A box of cards, wrapped in a piece of paper held to the cards with a rubber band. Hakkai removes the rubber band, then unfolds the paper. He reads the crudely written message on it and chuckles to himself.
For when you get bored and I'm not here to entertain you.
"Thank you, Gojyo."
". . ."
Hakkai smiles, then stands, setting the cards carefully on the shelf.
"Where are you going?"
"Out. I'll be back soon." Hakkai grabs his coat, heading into the town, hoping a store will still be open. He wanders the streets, finally finding a single open store. He walks inside, smiling at the young girl behind the counter. "Merry Christmas!"
"Merry Christmas!" She chirps back. "Do you need a present for someone?"
"In fact, I do." Hakkai grins, rubbing the back of his head. "I forgot what day it was."
The girl laughs. "Who is it for?"
"A good friend of mine. He's helped me more than I could say. . ."
"What kind of things does he like?"
"Um. . . beer, smoking and women, mainly." Hakkai laughs, embarrassed.
The girl smiles at him, her eyes lighting up. "I think I know something that will be good for him!"
Hakkai follows her to the back of the store. There, under a glass case, are several different lighters, all nice ones. Hakkai smiles, looking at them. He points to one, a fine silver one with a white dragon on it. "I'd like that one."
"All right." The girl pulls it out and leads Hakaki back to the front, where he picks up two boxes of cigarettes. "Would you like me to wrap it for you?"
"That would be great." Hakkai nods, paying for the gift. The girl wraps it in festive paper, tying a green ribbon around it. She hands it to him and he bows slightly. "Thank you. Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas to you too!"
Hakkai waves, walking out. He heads home, head bowed against the storm that has started up. He walks into the house, smiling at Gojyo, who has started a fire. "Looks like we'll have a white Christmas."
"Yeah. Where'd you go?"
Hakkai pulls the gift out, tossing it to Gojyo, who catches it and stares at him. "Merry Christmas."
Gojyo tears at the paper, then stops, staring at the lighter, resting on top of the cigarettes. "Wow. . . eh, thanks. And smokes too!"
Hakkai laughs as Gojyo opened the first box of cigarettes, flicking the new lighter on, lighging the cigarette. "I thought you would like it."
"And they're good smokes too." Gojyo grins at his friend. "Thanks Hakkai."
"Of course."
"Merry Christmas, Hakkai."
"Merry Christmas, Gojyo."
