A light, spun drabble on wide eyes and breath-held wonder. I know Character#2 is labeled as Hermione Granger, but take your pick of whom "her" refers to.
You know, what we have is amazing.
Draco Malfoy has never had anything like that before. Amazing is a word reserved for the loyal, the noble, the pure, and most especially the saviors of the Wizarding world. Amazing is virginal, singular and breathtaking.
Amazing is not for Malfoys, Slytherins, Death-Eaters-in-training or small pointy boys deathly afraid of the future.
But here he is. Light fingertip touches, shy smiles and an incomparable sense of wonder. One that makes his eyes shine like a child swathed in moonbeams and magic, that makes his mouth part gently open. Because there is her.
He can never help himself from tracing his fingers across her face every time they meet. Never can truly believe she is here, with him, letting him touch her and breathe her and be with her.
Doe-eyed and breath like morning dew, a scent so fresh and pure he is heady with the absolute clean simpleness of it. Untainted like newfallen snow.
He feels young and innocent again, mouth trembling and bright eyes and small, stumbling legs. He isn't sure what to do, where to go. He doesn't want to think too much (Merlin, what if he loses her?) but at the same time he's afraid not to overanalyze every small detail - just in case he wakes tomorrow and it is all just a wisp of memory.
And yet there's something about her that makes him stop thinking. Something about her that makes him open his hands helplessly and offer them to her. Unspoken are the things he is offering, because he doesn't quite know –
Everything, his eyes are saying.
Her eyes speak a quiet soft smile. Her fingers find their way into his.
Tomorrow, there will be hallways and Houses. Tomorrow, there will be eons and abysses. Tomorrow will worm its way between their trembling, uncertain fingers.
But until then, there is starshine and dust playing a halo in her hair. There is her smile and perhaps, perhaps he will carry that smile until Tomorrow ends and his fingers will find hers again.
