Booth and Brennan were eating lunch at the Royal diner when Booth saw a surprised look appear on Brennan's face. She had been in the middle of her explanation about her latest success in identifying the remains of a United States solider that had been found in a farm field in France. The body had been transferred to the Jeffersonian three years ago and Brennan had finally had time to work on his identification. Booth loved how excited and animated she became when she was able to give a name to someone who had been dead for so long. The fogotten were given a face and a name and that wouldn't happen unless people like Brennan did what they did. It just amazed Booth how she could do that.
Seeing the look of surprise on Brennan's face, Booth turned around and saw Hannah walk through the front doorway. With a cold feeling in the pit of his stomach, Booth turned back around and looked at Brennan. Seeing her smile at him, Booth realized that his partner didn't seem to be as worried about the meeting as he was. This was good, wasn't it? Booth had enough worry for the both of them.
Hannah, seeing Brennan and Booth at their usual table, walked over to their table to join them. "Hello Temperance . . . hello Seeley."
Pleased to see her friend, Brennan smiled. "Hello Hannah, would you like to join us?"
Seeing Brennan's welcome smile and Booth's frown, Hannah wasn't sure if she was really welcome. Thinking that it was now or never, Hannah forced herself to smile and accept the offer. "Thanks Temperance."
Hannah decided to sit down next to Brennan, so that she would be facing her former lover. Booth staring at the plate in front of him continued to eat his lunch. Reaching out her hand, Hannah touched the top of Booth's left hand and tried to get hus attention. "Seeley . . . Seeley, I've been thinking about us a lot lately and I wanted you to know that I made a mistake. I should have given us a try . . . When you asked me to marry you . . . well , you scared me. I wasn't expecting you to do that . . . I've always considered myself a nomad and I didn't think I could change that for anyone, not even you . . . I know now that if you love someone you can change. I hope you'll forgive me and be my friend again. I miss you."
Turning towards Brennan, Hannah smiled. "And I miss you too, Temperance. I don't allow myself to have a lot of friends, but when I do I hate to lose them. I hope you'll forgive me for losing contact with you for the last few months. I just had a lot on my plate and I . . . I needed time to work through it."
Hopeful that all would be forgiven, Hannah turned her gaze back towards Booth and saw a blank look on his face. Taking her hand from Booth's hand, Hannah pleaded with him. "Won't you even say anything to me, Seeley? I said I'm sorry . . . Doesn't that count for anything? I made a mistake. I never meant to hurt you."
Slowing looking up, Booth continued to give Hannah a blank look. His feelings for her now dead, he didn't see any point in renewing a friendship with her. Looking over at Brennan, Booth advised her, "Bones, we have that interview with Guy Peterson in a half hour. I think we should be on our way, don't you?" Taking his wallet out of his jacket pocket, Booth removed some bills from the fold to cover his and Brennan's meal and placed it on the table between their plates.
Aware that Booth was acting oddly, Brennan knew that Booth was trying to be civil with his former lover. She knew how hard his break up with Hannah had been and she guessed that he probably couldn't bear to be near the reporter now. She realized that Booth probably only saw pain when he looked at his former lover. Brennan placed her fork down on her plate and turned towards Hannah. "It's been very nice seeing you again Hannah, but we really do need to leave."
Getting up from the table, Brennan looked at Booth and pointed at the doorway. "Yes, we shouldn't be late for the interview, Booth."
Stunned Hannah stared at Brennan's stomach. Never in her wildest dreams did she ever imagine that she would see the image she was seeing before her. A pregnant Brennan walked around the table and took Booth's arm in hers. The anthropoligst appeared to be about five months pregnant. Very observant Hannah. Don't they pay you to be observant? God how embarrassing.
Turning back towards Hannah as she left, Brennan smiled once more. "Thank you. Thank you for being my friend."
With remorse for what could have been, Hannah watched Booth and Brennan leave the diner. "I should have given us a chance and now it's too late."
