A Little Too Chilly

"Okay, explain to me again how the hell we didn't know about this?" Sheppard asked McKay as they walked down the frigid hallway of Atlantis, pulling their coats as tight as they could.

"Well, it's like the sea warming phenomenon," Rodney replied, shivering despite his big coat. "Just like the warm sea and massive hurricane only comes every twenty or thirty years, every fifty or so years two extreme cold fronts from the poles come together and cover the majority of the planet. Causing a colder winter than usual."

"Colder than usual?" Sheppard asked, incredulous. "Rodney, there's a huge blizzard blowing and it's forty degrees below zero outside!"

"Yes, well…" McKay began.

Sheppard didn't even give him the chance to continue. "And of course not only can nobody step outside, everybody's freezing their toes, fingers, and asses off inside because somebody broke the heater!"

"Atlantis' temperature is not a heater," he protested. "It's much more sophisticated than that. And it wasn't my fault that it broke."

Sheppard sighed. "Of course. It never is."

McKay opened his mouth to respond to that, but he was cut off by an announcement over the intercom system. "Colonel Sheppard and Doctor McKay to the control room."

Both reflexively changed course for that room, and were there in no time. Elizabeth was standing there, by the front of the room looking down into the Gateroom. She turned to face Sheppard and McKay as they entered, a stern look on her face.

"Both of you, come here and look at this," she said, beckoning them over with a hand.

They came, and, as Elizabeth pointed, they too looked down into the Gateroom. And tried not to laugh as they saw a foot-long hole in one of the glass windows in the back of the Gateroom, through which a continuous stream of pure white snow was flowing. The majority of the floor was already several inches deep in the white fluff and several of Atlantis's resident Marines were down there, having a full-blown snowball fight.

"Rodney, there is a hole in the window," Elizabeth said. "I'm wondering how it got there, but right now I'm more concerned with getting it fixed. And John, your Marines are keeping a team from leaving. I want them out of there."

"Aw, c'mon, Elizabeth!" Sheppard protested. "I've been hating this cold as much as the next person, but there's snow in the Gateroom. That clearly calls for a snowball fight. As a matter of fact…" He grabbed a hold of Elizabeth's gloved hand and pulled her down the stairs towards the Gateroom. "Let's go and join them!"
