Inspired by Star Trek: Into Darkness. When Kirk asked Spock if he knew why he went back for him. This is one sided slash that has been bouncing around in my head for some time now, well, only a day, but still...If my character voice sounds off, that's because it probably is. Enjoy- Rose
Why? that was the question that had been bouncing around in his head all day. No matter how Kirk rationalized what he did, every answer sounded fake. He had told Spock that he did it because that was how he had been raised. But ever time Kirk was asked, his answer changed.
"Why Jim?"
"Because it was the right thing to do."
"Why Captain?"
"Because I couldn't let him die without doing something."
"Why?"
"Because he would have done the same for me."
"Why'd ya do it?"
"Because he is my friend."
Every time a different answer until he ran out of answers. The truth was, Kirk didn't know why he did what he did, he just did. And it's not that Jim didn't know that saving Spock was against the rules. How could he not with Spock telling him so over the conn? Yes, Spock was a friend. Yes, Kirk couldn't let Spock die without doing something. No, Spock would not have done the same thing, and no, it was not the right thing to do. But it was how Kirk had been raised, you don't let the people you love die.
Wait. Love? S'chn T'Gai Spock?
The idea stops Kirk in his tracks, and no matter how hard Jim tries, he can't shake the idea from his head. It sounds wrong every time Kirk says it in his head, but where the other answers sound fake, this one does not.
The next day, when Kirk receives a call from Spock regarding something Scottie found, his heart jumps at the sound of the Vulcans voice. Jim groans once he has hung up, mainly because not even the twins who call after him to not go, can't make his heart do the flip that it just did.
When Jim finally meets up with Spock to find Scottie, Kirk examines the Vulcan's tall frame. It takes Jim a moment to realize just what he's doing, but when the realization does hit, it sounds something like oh my god, did I just check out ? Quickly giving himself a mental shake, Jim knows that Scottie is waiting. Somehow, the two men end up running through the halls, and as the two run, Kirk is painfully aware of Spock's movements next to him. With the movements came the memory of his idea from yesterday.
Love? S'chn T'gai Spock?
Sure as hell feels that way.
