My first Gilmore Girls fic. Tonight's episode gave me a plot bunny that hopped in and made itself at home. I hope you enjoy it.

Baby Blue Eyes

Luke watched in awe at the bundle he held in his arms. The tiny baby was so perfect, so precious. Her tiny fingers curled around his own, and he blocked out the incessant babbling of TJ in the background.

Baby Doula slept peacefully, undisturbed by the chatter and commotion around her. As Luke rocked her quietly, her eyes flittered open, and stared into Luke's own eyes.

Luke's breath hitched as he caught sight of her gorgeous blue eyes. She blinked up at her uncle, taking in his features. Luke couldn't describe the emotion he was feeling right now, he just knew that it made him happy.

"Oh, would you look at those eyes? They are just the most beautiful thing I have ever seen," Liz cooed over her daughter.

"They're just like Liz's, don't you think Luke?" T.J. showed equal pride in his daughter.

Luke had to disagree with T.J. The bright blue eyes that were currently staring up at him bore a resemblance to Liz's, but there was someone else whose eyes were closer.

'Lorelai,' Luke thought to himself, tenderly holding his niece closer.

"Lorelai!" Luke said in alarm.

"Oh, she is so precious. Can I hold her?" Lorelai asked, ignoring Luke's earlier comment.

Luke hesitated for a moment. "Okay," he finally replied.

"Hello there, hello sweet thing," Lorelai spoke softly to the baby.

"Her name's Doula," Luke explained.

"Doula?" Lorelai asked incredulously.

"It's Liz and T.J., what did you expect?"

"Well, I guess that's okay. You're so sweet, yes you are, yes you are," Lorelai continued to coo at the baby.

"Lorelai!" Chris called out in surprise.

"Oh," Lorelai turned as Chris walked out of Doose's. "This is Liz's new baby," Lorelai explained.

Luke could see that this was a tense moment between the two of them. To avoid the confrontation, he quickly made an excuse to leave.

"Well, I have to go. Doula is going to be hungry soon, and Liz will be upset if I'm gone too long," Luke explained. He took the baby from Lorelai and replaced her in her stroller. Lorelai gave a small wave as he hurried back to Liz's house.

As he walked away, Luke remembered how happy and bright Lorelai had seemed with Doula in her arms. And seeing them side to side, Luke could tell just how much their eyes were alike. It had been easy to let himself get carried away for a moment; to imagine that Lorelai was holding her daughter, their daughter in his arms.

Luke shook himself vigorously. He couldn't have these thoughts. She was with Christopher, and that was the end of that. What they had had was in the past.

If only they could have brought that into the future.
