A/N: Written for the PMMM Flash Bingo, #010 – nerve.

Nerves were Puppet Strings

She wondered if those bodily parts called nerves were also a myth, or just misunderstood.

Medicine had quite the interesting history. Once upon a time, the heart was a demon trying to escape its confines. And there weren't nerves or blood vessels but rather this invisible thing called meridian lines.

Now, with her soul separate from her body and Kyubey's paw on the soul gem causing such intense pain while fighting Kyouko and having her skin sliced again and again had caused very little of it at all, she wondered if their ancestors hadn't had the right idea after all.

She could only think of two possibilities. The soul was still intricately tied to the body – but then why didn't the soul suffer when the body did? Adrenaline was an excuse that only stretched so far.

And the other possibility was, of course, that the science of today was wrong. That it wasn't little chemicals firing machine guns that caused pain at all. That it was something invisible. Something similar to what allowed her to control her body now that the soul was outside of it, that gem. Invisible, like the so-called meridian lines of the past, before they cut open the first human body to find tangible threads, like puppet strings.

Or maybe nerves had no connection to the brain but were rather tied with the soul. A third possibility, and another she couldn't really rebuke. They were puppet strings in that aspect as well. Nerves were puppet strings.

That was a pretty good conclusion to draw, she thought. Especially when she was no doctor nor scientific mind herself.
