Sixth Sense

Hm. I don't know how good my Supermartian is... First time for everything!

AAAAHHH, SIX MORE DAYS!

"And so by using all her five senses, the little kitty was able to solve the mystery of what kind of food they sold at the little shop on the corner," Connor finished, closing the little picture book and peering down at the sleeping preschoolers. He and M'gann decided to volunteer at their local preschool for Community Service week at their school. Reading stories to the little preschoolers before nap time was one of the better parts of their job.

M'gann quietly walked over to the small, preschooler-sized bench and sat next to Connor.

"You know," she whispered, "There are actually six senses on Mars?"

"Actually, I didn't. What is it?"

"We still have seeing, hearing, tasting, feeling and smelling, but the fifth one is empathizing— or the mind."

"So reading each others mind like a book is a sense?" the Kryptonian asked bluntly, raising an eyebrow.

"Actually, it's a bit more complicated," the Martain chastised lightly. "Empathizing is like understanding another's emotions and thoughts— putting yourself completely in their shoes, to use an earth phrase."

"So you find out what others are feeling," Connor said, rewording his thought.

M'gann pursed her lips. "On a very basic level, yes. But really, it's knowing what they are feeling and what they are thinking so you can understand them and sympathize with them. On Mars, there really aren't many— or any— quarrels over misunderstanding."

"Sounds a lot different than here."

M'gann yawned, the quiet and calm of the room calling her to sleep. She shook it off, though, and kept talking. "It is, but... it isn't. There still are arguments over differences in opinions. We know why we someone would think a specific way, but we just might not agree. No world is perfect."

"I think I get it," Connor said hesitantly.

M'gann smiled. "It's okay; the whole thing still confuses me a bit, too. Empathizing is a rather complicated concept even on Mars. Even more so because we have that power to completely understand each other, yet still be a bit overwhelmed and confused or not agree with what we find out."

"Earth would be a lot more different if humans had that skill. I don't know if everyone would use it for just empathizing, though."

"It's sad that some wouldn't, but... Earth isn't Mars," she said, yawning lightly as she leaned her head on Connor's shoulder.

"Do you ever wish it was?"

She paused. "I think, no. I— I don't..." she trailed off, eyes drooping closed until her breathing steadied and turned into soft snores.

The corners of Connor's mouth twitched up just the slightest bit— almost unnoticeably. "I know what you mean," he whispered as her warm breath gently tickles his neck and he hugged her closer to himself.

I don't know how much I like that ending. Oh well. Yolo. Unless you're Jason Todd. That lucky *beep* got to live twice. XD

My next drabble is titled Five Second Rule! Look out for it! ;)
