Prologue

The wingless fallen angel

Surrendered herself to the contract of evil

In the past they even loved each other

She ended it by her own hand

I found myself mumbling the same lullaby I sang every time I was with her. Putting her hand over mine, her teal eyes found my emerald ones, meanwhile my free hand played with the ringlets of green hair the child possessed. "Angel?" I listened to her soothing voice plead.

I looked down at her. "Yes?" I asked, swinging her legs over the side of my lap so I could get a full view of her porcelain face. She had to be at least seven years old, I estimated. Her age was something she had never exactly told me.

"You said earlier that you wanted to tell me something." She replied, grinning.

That grin was it—the thing that pushed me over the edge. I felt a few tears well up in my eyes before I dropped my hand from hers and removed her from my lap.

Her grin suddenly disappeared. "Angel?" She pressed, a tiny crease indenting itself above her eyebrows. Her eyes were beginning to get wet with a building sob. "Please don't cry, Angel," She said, standing up and petting my shoulder. The bluenette began to wipe my tearstreaks away with a corner of her white dress, which I quickly refused.

I abruptly stopped my silent crying and plastered a smile across my face. "I need to go away for a little bit," I explained to the little girl. "But it's okay," I promised, closing my eyes and forcing a laugh. "I'll be back soon." I lied, knowing that my coming back was nearly impossible.

The teal-eyed girl bit her lip, and I could tell a million thoughts were swimming through her head. "Do you promise, Angel?" She questioned, holding out her pinky. I felt my pinky shake as it met hers. "Of course," My mouth quirked up in the corner.

Suddenly, she began to sing. I gave her a questioning look. I hadn't heard her sing before.
