A/N: Yeah...this is a weird little thing that I decided to write in an essay format. I got it from all the stories on here about how the BDs are all described as being wonderful, caring guys. And also, the relationship that has grown between me and my BD. Enjoy, and please, review!
Why?
This is not a story, like many of the things I have written. I would like to consider it a drabble of thoughts running through my head on a well-discussed idea. What is this idea, you find yourself asking. I will answer you, dear reader, by saying my idea is about the relationship built between a band student and their director.
First, what exactly does it mean to be a band student? That is a personal journey that all "band geeks" go through. However, to me, being a band student is a lot more than just learning to play an instrument and playing music. Band, for those of us who would actually take the time to read this, is a way of life. All of our friends are in Band, like some freakish social group. It is a collection of at least forty people who all share the same obsession. Some would even go as far as to call it a huge family, all united under one person. That person is the band director.
Why then, do we band students become so close to our directors? After all, they are merely teachers, just there to make us learn and give us grades that go on a report card. Or are they? Some of us do not look at directors as merely teachers. For some unexplainable reason, we create a very close bond with our directors. Sometimes, we become friends with the directors.
How could someone become friends with a teacher? A band geek does not see the director as a teacher. They are simply older, sometimes fatter, band geeks. Perhaps it is the abnormal amount of time we spend with these people that creates such a strong bond.
Besides, who ever heard of waking up at six in the morning on a Saturday to come to the school for an eight hour practice? If your history teacher asked you to come for an eight hour lecture on Alexander the Great, would you go? Faithfully, for six weeks straight? Of course not. So, what is that makes us want to go to these…lectures? That is, in essence, what they are. We learn music at these long rehearsals.
Learning. Now that's an odd concept to think about in band terms. This is all linked, in an odd, out of the way sort of way, to a deep, passionate love for music. Which is the stuff that holds bands together, and also what holds together the relationships that become of the multiple hours spent with our beloved Band Directors.
