"You cannot be serious, Ronald!"
Wait…what? Oh great Godric.
Was she really saying no?
The Twins had always said that when he was nervous about something, all the blood drained from his face, making him look like a Muggle circus clown with a really bad case of the mumps. That's why they had Ginny speak to Mum whenever they'd made a mess of the kitchen or forgotten to take care of the garden gnomes. Ron just didn't have the chops for it. He'd try to put on a brave front, but then he'd give it all away with just one look at his fear stricken face.
Oh sure, he'd faced down Voldemort at Harry and Hermione's side without breaking so much as a sweat. Even though he had been quite terrified of losing that great battle. But that was fear he could handle. Fear that could be dealt with throwing hexes and dodging curses.
But if it was something to do with explaining to his Mum why she'd gotten a note from the headmaster about him hexing that blasted ferret or that whole bloody mess with Dad's auto and the Whomping Willow…
…facing the wrath of someone you loved was much worse than being at the business end of an evil wizard's Avada Kedavra.
Maybe he should have asked Ginny to do this, too. Though having Ginny here would have been really difficult to explain to Hermione.
His heart having sunk somewhere in the area of his toes, he looked back at Hermione, ready to apologize, ready to take it all back, even if it killed him. But he couldn't seem to find his voice. He had meant it. Every nervous, halting word. What the hell was he…
"I mean, HONESTLY. You could at least get down on one knee and do it proper, for Merlin's sake!"
"Oh, right," he said, blushing from head to toe at his bonehead move. And just like that, his heart was slowly, but surely, returning to its correct place.
Defeating Voldemort had nothin' on this.
