Task one for the 'Pottermore Challenge' - Write about someone gaining something of great value. Alternatively, write about someone losing something of great value.
Hazel eyes peered down into her cold tea as she avoided looking at the seething man sitting across from her. She knew he was angry; it would be hard not to know with the way his fists were clenched white and his lips were pinched thin. She could even admit she might be angry too, if she were in his position.
She wasn't, though. Instead, she was sitting perfectly poised as she tried to keep the guilty glee off her face, so as not to send him into a full blown rage.
Readjusting her feet, she took a sip of her cold beverage and looked covertly at him through her long eyelashes.
"Well?! How has this come about?" he said, words stunted as he tried and failed to sound unaffected by this turn of events, instead of blisteringly angry. And truly, she wished she could answer him. She had never planned for this to happen, had never guessed that this would come around.
His loss truly was her gain in this situation.
"I'm unsure, sir. Have you asked Tim? He's in charge of this, you realise." she questioned, her voice forced pleasant. Regardless of whether she had stolen his promotion from a position lower in the system than he had ever been, it was very unprofessional of him to bring her in here to interrogate her. Perhaps that was why she was chosen in his place.
"Listen here, woman- I have been slaving for this department for ten years, I will not have some rookie come in and ruin all my hard work!" His voice ebbed and flowed as he attempted to restrain himself, but couldn't and he ended up shouting. His portly face was slowly reddening and his knuckles had started shaking as he lost the very little control he had previously had over his temper. She supposed the reason she was picked could also be his temper, which was quick to rise.
"I'm sorry, sir. There's nothing I can do in this situation- Tim chose me. It would be rude to reject such generous offer made to me."
Her polite words were followed rather rudely by a snort from the man across the desk from her, and she stiffened in offence. Really, this conversation was getting out of hand.
"If you have any more objections, please bring them up with Tim. I have to leave, as I have a meeting in ten minutes. It was a pleasure speaking with you, sir." she said disapprovingly, but enforcing polite distance in her words. Arguing with the stupid and obnoxious never worked, and she truly didn't have time for this any more.
She had lot's to do to prepare for the job of her dreams. As she left, the gleeful smile that she had repressed to prevent rubbing salt in the mans wounds surfaced, and she resolved to have some chocolate cake at lunch to celebrate this new, perfect development in her life.
