Another Day, Another Anomaly
Even the most wondrous thing, when experienced with too much frequency, becomes mundane. Connor had grown to feel that way about the anomalies. Once they seemed so amazing, so magical. How many times had he allowed metallic objects to be sucked out of his hands just for his own amusement? It had seemed such a lark back then.
The wonder had faded. The anomalies came to represent death. Frustration. Fear. The awe of seeing living, breathing dinosaurs had lessened in the face of claws and fangs. And deep down Connor knew that an anomaly would one day be the death of him as well. As it had been for Tom, and Nick, and Captain Ryan, and Stephen. Even Claudia Brown.
Today, though…today was different. Today the anomaly was every bit as magnificent as that first one had been, in the Forest of Dean. Abby, standing in front of it, was nothing short of beautiful as the light played across her face.
"What d'you think is on the other side?" she whispered.
Connor squeezed her hand, which was tightly clutching his own. "Dunno."
Now that it had finally come, Connor was feeling uncertain. After six months spent trying to survive the Cretaceous, he was more than ready to go home. But what if home didn't await them on the other side? He hadn't forgotten that they'd come through the future anomaly to get here, and they certainly weren't equipped to go back that way. They'd be dead in minutes.
"We could take a quick look," Abby suggested. "And come right…back. If it's bad."
Home. Connor knew that Abby had almost said they could come back home. For despite the daily struggles for food and safety, the Cretaceous had become their home. They knew what to expect here, knew what to do to stay alive. This anomaly could lead anywhere – a frozen past, a dead future, or a desert full of giant, man-eating bugs. The possibilities were endless…and frightening.
"Together, yeah?" Connor asked. Abby nodded. They would go through together, so that neither one could be accidentally left behind. Regardless of where this anomaly led, Connor knew there'd be no surviving it without Abby. They'd become a team. Partners. They relied on each other for everything here; not just protection, but companionship and comfort. Love.
Connor rolled his shoulders, mentally gearing up for what they might find. They each had their emergency backpacks; wherever they were going, they wouldn't be unprepared. He turned to look at Abby, and brought his hand up to gently caress her cheek.
"You and me, Abs."
Abby pulled Connor's head down and pressed her lips against his. She gave him courage, as she always did. For six months she had been helping him stay centered and focused, had lifted him up when he'd despaired of ever returning home. Connor had repaid her by learning how to hunt and fish, carrying his weight and not being a burden. And he loved her, the one thing he'd always truly excelled at.
In the light of that love, and in the light of the anomaly, there was hope again. And that was wondrous in itself. Hands tightly clasped, Connor and Abby each took a deep breath and stepped through the anomaly, hoping that home lay on the other side; certain that whatever it was, they would face it together.
AN: This is my first Primeval fic, hope it wasn't too awful! This is dedicated to duchessfaleen, who has been begging me to write some Connor and Abby. Not exactly what you had in mind, but I have to start somewhere, yeah? ::grins::
