This is a standalone-brother-story to Palindrome, my first Soul Eater story.
"Must get the right number…must get the right number or I cannot leave." Death the Kid was currently at a gas station. Has been at said gas station for approximately ten minutes already, pumping gas into Soul's motorcycle.
Why Kid wanted to joyride on Soul's motorcycle no one knew but he had promised to fill the tank back up. The attendant at the gas station had left the cool air conditioning off his store to watch the OCD child of Death. It was interesting to watch the meter go up slowly, Kid's eyebrows strained in concentration and his eyes blazing.
It was at $20.01 currently and it had to be $20.02 to be a perfect number. A palindrome.
He took a big breath and the attendant found himself doing the same. He clicked the handle and time seemed to freeze for a moment and they both watched as the little number flipped over to two.
Then three.
"Nooooo!" Kid yelled as he once again started the slow pumping of gas until it was $21.10.
Bated breath, another click, and $21.14 appeared.
Night had fallen and a laughing moon's light washed over Soul as he waited for his vehicle outside of his apartment. He was worried that Kid had someone broke it and he scanned the street back and forth in impatience. If he had thought about it he would have asked Maka to use her soul perception and find him quicker. But he was worried and that was so uncool.
There was a low rumble and he grinned in its direction. He would recognize his baby's purr anywhere.
Kid parked the motorcycle deftly and with grace in front of the weapon and hopped off.
"So where'd you go?" Soul asked as he inspected the bike for any damage.
"Just the gas station down the street."
"And?"
"That's it. Oh, and here's the receipt so you know I filled her up." Kid smiled serenely down at his friend. "Thank you for letting me take it while Beelzebub gets repaired."
Kid walked away with a wave leaving Soul to his inspection. He jostled it a little and didn't hear any sloshing. He was angry for a second, thinking Kid had forgotten to fill it up but then he remembered the receipt. "Holy shit!" He fell over laughing at the $88.88 printed at the bottom.
