Estanzia Crane:
Hi, my name is Estanzia Crane and I am sixteen-years-old. My ex-boyfriend is extremely abusive towards me and anyone who looks at me. My parents tried to get me to break up with him, but it never worked because wherever we moved to, he always managed to find out where we were. We moved from one city to another in the same state but he always managed to find me and he always managed to make everyone around me hate me or want nothing to do with me.
I was in school at lunch when he showed up to talk to me. I was eating with some friends when he walked in. I laughed at what a friend said and then I saw him, the look in his eyes told me I was going to get it when I was out of school. But that was the mixed signal he was sending me. He walked up to the table and demanded that I go with him. When I refused, he grabbed me by arm roughly and pulled me to my feet, forcing me out of the cafeteria. Students all around stood up from the tables they were sitting at and my friends tried to stop him. They tried and almost succeeded until he pulled out the gun and shot one of the football players in the leg. People screamed and tried running. He let go of my arm and aimed the gun at me. I stood in my spot, mesmerized by what he was doing. The gun went off and I felt myself being pulled to the side. I was still hit by the bullet but not straight on like I would have been if someone hadn't pulled me sideways.
My ex-boyfriend was arrested soon after the school shooting. The football player was okay but he couldn't play the rest of the season. I however was worse off than the rest of the kids in the cafeteria. The bullet had hit me in the chest, collapsing my right lung. I was on a ventilator and my friends didn't know if I was going to make it out of the hospital alive. This was the first school that had accepted the fact that I had a boyfriend that was trying to kill me. Everyone in the school had become close with me, trying to protect me from the man that had ruined my life so many times and had kept my family on the run for nearly two years.
That's about the time U.S. Marshal Mary Shannon and her partner came upon me. My parents had given up and left me with a friend, knowing that there was the possibility of him coming back and finding me. My parents moved out of the state and left me to fend for myself. He didn't come after me for half the year. Then the school shooting came and my life was in the hands of the doctors and God himself. That was all my life needed. I'm not saying that I'm not a religious person, I just don't openly admit to it and go to church all the time. It's just not my thing.
Unfortunately for me, I wasn't the only one about to be put into Witness Protection. The football player that was shot and the friends I was sitting at the table with when he grabbed me would be put into the system with me and we would all stay together, under our new assumed names and lifestyles. We had a chance to start over and put my ex behind bars once and for all.
Now all I had to do was wake up from my coma and get off the ventilator in order for the plan to work. That was going to be a tough one seeing as the doctors didn't know if I was even going to make it through the night.
