Chapter 1
Mulan sat on one of the logs that surrounded the campfire Shang had built. She barely paid attention to the other soldiers sitting beside her, talking to everyone but her. She was invisible, the weak link that couldn't keep up. Only Yao, Ling, Chien Po, and sometimes Shang were the only exception, but even then she felt alone. As her mind drifted, she didn't notice how rowdy the men had gotten after Shang had left. Mulan knew someone was behind her but she was too deep in thought to really care about it.
"Hey everyone, Ping here thinks he's too good to talk to us, don't you, Ping." As she was pushed from the log, she realized she was in trouble. She sat on the ground as she watched the men make a circle around her and Fu Fuhua.
"Leave him alone," Yao said as he and Ling tried to push their way toward Mulan. Chien Po had rushed off to go get the captain.
"Shut up," Fu Fuhua told Yao as he came closer to Mulan, "Ping and I have some unfinished business to finish, after all, you are the one who made me look like a fool and now, I'm going to return the favor. Feng, Fang grab Yao and Ling before they go get the captain. {Insert Name} go look for Chien Po and make sure he doesn't move from wherever he is." Mulan stood up slowly as Fu Fuhua was talking and she waited till he was distracted before she tried running. "Not so fast," Fu Fuhua said as someone grabbed the back of Mulan's uniform.
"I am going to punch you, very hard, and it won't be just once," Fu Fuhua said as someone drew Mulan closer to him. Looking up at Fu Fuhua, Mulan said nothing, only stuck her tongue out. She watched him get angrier and he started to raise his fist. He went to punch her, only she was expecting it so she dodged and punched him back. Catching him off guard, Mulan tried to run away again, only to have Fu Fuhua land on her and he started to punch her repeatedly.
"Let him go." Mulan heard Shang yell as he walked toward them. "Who started this?" Fu Fuhua immedialty blamed Mulan, saying that she through the first punch. "Is this true, Fa Ping?"
"In a way, General, but he-," Shang cut her off, disappointment dripping from his voice when he said he didn't need to hear excuses, and that he will tell Ping his punishment in the morning. With that, Shang turned and left. Fu Fuhua and the other men left one by one now that their fun was done. Yao went straight to Shang's tent as soon as he was released. Ling tried to talk to her but Mulan ignored him. Instead, she walked into her tent, feeling as if she had been through a rock slide. She dreaded tomorrow for she would be able to see the bruises, more proof that she doesn't belong here. Mulan felt tears slipping down her face from the shame of not being able to protect herself and from the anger she felt toward Shang for believing Fu Fuhua over her, not even letting her explain before he made a decision. Mulan wiped her face, resolving to no longer let the men affect her, nor letting Shang be disappointed in her again. She will no longer be the weak link. And with that thought, she went to sleep.
