Things of the Past
"Together, we can do it."
There was once a time where Asada Ryutaro really did believe those words. He would allow those words to work their magic and manipulate him to different social gatherings, such as drinking parties.
Asada told himself that it was a mutual benefit that allowed him to yield. He tagged along for a few hours and in return Asada got almost whatever he wanted in the hospital. It was as fair as fair could get.
At first, it had just been pleasantries. Asada was just another surgeon, nothing more, nothing less. It wasn't odd for surgical doctors to know each other. Then Asada got assigned to the other man's team. They began talking a little more, about surgery, about their goals, and about themselves.
"I believe that we can change the medical sect of Japan."
Asada didn't know when, but somehow along the line before he became the first assistant, he also began to believe.
Was it that time when his car broke down and he hitched a ride home with the other? Their conversation didn't consist of profound life teachings, but he spoke with certain convictions that made Asada pay attention. At the end of their car ride, Asada felt like he found a member of his team.
"We must reform the medical universities."
Or was it that time when he stood up for him in front of the professor? Asada felt a rush of gratitude and confusion. No doctor who wished to advance in a medical university would stand up against a professor for a notorious trouble maker. Yet, that man did. He told the professor that Asada's recommendations should be considered and even implemented.
That man believed in him. It was one thing to carry one's belief, but it was different when someone else also believed.
That's why Asada took the head surgeon position.
Asada already respected that man for his skills and unwavering beliefs. Now, Asada thought as he snapped the gloves tighter. It was time for the other to see the resolution of Asada's beliefs.
"Together, we can do it."
Asada Ryutaro had truly believed that Kirima Gunji was the first member of his team.
But as Asada struggled to complete a heart message in the middle of blazing blue flames, he had already forgotten of such a person. It wasn't because Asada didn't want to think of him. It wasn't because Asada forgave him.
Rather, the only one who mattered was the patient who was dying in his hands.

A/N: Something I wanted to write after watching the first season of Iryu TMD. It doesn't go with the manga, but hey, it's under the same category kinda, sorta, right?
I may write some more drabbles just based on the drama later. We'll see.
