Memories, Forever Gone
A/N: Inspired by a plot bunny from Ladyluck on Fiction Alley.
Disclamer: I do not own Harry Potter, simple as that.
He ran as fast as he could, his breaths rasping painfully, up one set of stairs, then another and another, twisting and turning, a tattered piece of parchment clenched in his fist. The Marauders' Map, he had seem something terrible happen.
Finally, he reached the second highest tower of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Slamming open the door Sirius Black's heart stopped as he saw the scene within.
Regulus, his younger brother stood facing from him, laughing hysterically a lumped form lay at his feet, in the moonless night it was impossible to see what it was, but Sirius knew, he wished it weren't true, but he knew.
"Regulus… What have you done?" His voice came out as a agonized rasp.
Turning swiftly, the voice breaking his mad laughter where the slamming door did not, blood was splattered on his pale face, his sharp eyes seemed to glow a maniacal red.
His pale yew wand gripped tightly in one hand.
As he stepped closer Sirius began to make out the shadowy form of their sister, Melusine. Her face was covered in cuts, half of a broken wand was shoved into her eye socket. Blood poured from her wounds, life having already left her.
Sirius froze, he couldn't move, couldn't breathe, his beloved younger sister lay dead, by the hand of her own brother.
"It couldn't be helped," Regulus' voice came out a smug hiss, snakelike and sent a shiver up Sirius' spine. Finally he could move again, but as soon as he tried to step closer Regulus raised his wand, a murderous gleam in those red eyes.
"She loved you!" Sirius screamed, tears pouring down his face.
For an instant the red seemed to recede from Regulus' eyes, but instant later it returned, more terrible than before.
"You corrupted her to your muggle loving ways, so it's your fault really." Came that smirking hiss, so unlike his brother.
Sirius remembered a time when he and Regulus had been best friends, inseparable, years later, everything had changed, Sirius had been sorted to Gryffindor, Regulus to Slytherin. Sirius had held hope his brother would come back to him, but now… nothing would be the same ever again.
In a swift motion Sirius drew his wand, a spell on his lips, but he was too late, far too late.
"Obliviate Maximus," It came out as a silky whisper, his eyes glowed a brighter red. There was a blinding green flash as the memory of Melusine was erased from the mind of anyone who'd ever known her, even Regulus Black.
Yet it could never erase the hate that Sirius gained for his younger brother that night.
