Author's Note | These characters belong to J.K. Rowling. I am making no profit from this.
This is an AU work pairing my 2 favorite characters, Lupin and Snape. Rated T for now. I haven't written fan fiction in years, and am not sure exactly where this will wind up going.
I was inspired to write this after reading an awesome one-shot story called "Once The Bridges Have Burned" by Shadow Padawan. I strongly encourage you to check it out!
I thought this little "teaser" was a fun way to introduce the main reason for the AU aspect. Somewhat OOC moments may result from this, but hopefully key elements of their personalities will remain familiar. I hope you enjoy! Thoughts / comments are appreciated. | lunatic33

A boy in oversized robes approaches the seat where he would be sorted. He limps, and long thick hair, not quite blonde and not quite brown, swings with his uneven gait. Tanned, calloused hands grip the lengthy threadbare robe and raise it out of the way of his feet. If one were to look into his large green eyes, they'd see a maturity well beyond his 11 years.
What's this? A dark creature…
Remus grits his teeth and closes his eyes. He squeezes one hand in the other, hidden in the over-long sleeves, but his long-practiced neutral face remains.
Don't worry. I won't tell anyone.
He releases a slow breath and opens his eyes. Avoiding the sea of faces before him, he gazes at the ceiling enchanted to show the starry night sky. Blankly watching a cloud float by, he instinctually tries to clear his mind.
Hmm, you are a complex one. You are certainly a brave and stubborn young pup to endure the pain, rein in your emotions, and guard your secret... But beyond this steadfast heart there is an aching desire to become great. You want to overcome your difficulties and become strong. You crave control. You never thought you would be here, and now that you are, you want to be a masterful wizard. You will not slack off or waste time. Yes, underlying the glaring dichotomy of your being there is overwhelming ambition. I believe you would do well in Gryffindor, but you will only truly thrive in —

A boy with a long ponytail as black and shiny as a new cauldron walks toward the sorting hat with a slow, self-important step. He pulls at his too-short robe sleeves with pale long-fingered hands. He keeps his chin ever-so-slightly raised. He has a prominent nose that somehow makes him appear older than a first-year.
Let's see. You are not a simple mind…
'Brilliant. Well spotted,' thinks the boy.
Thank you, Mr. Snape. I do what I can.
Suddenly apprehensive, he trains his dark eyes on a single star in the enchanted ceiling and tries to blank out his brain.
As I was saying, you almost seem to be of two minds. One careful, calculating, and methodical, seeing and analyzing every detail. The other fearless, stubborn, and unafraid of risks. Things dark and dangerous, things others shy away from, actually appeal to you. You are also capable of deeper emotion than you like to admit. You do not love easily, but when you do it is everlasting. To the few you care for you show absolute, unflinching loyalty. Salazar's house would not do badly for you, but truly you must belong in —
GRYFFINDOR!
