In a world where the sun never shined and the streets were always wet, a castle floated in the sky. Its insides were the brightest white imaginable, smooth and reflecting and blinding and cold. Its inhabitants were black, deep and solid and consuming. They walked through the castle talking of hearts and feelings they no longer possessed. They developed personalities, lies that helped them pretend to feel. Some were obnoxious and loud, others quiet and calculating. They were all governed by an empty man, the most hollow of them all. He sat atop a great pillar, cold gaze reminding everyone how empty they were, and cruel voice sneering orders at them. More hearts were needed if they ever wanted to feel, more people had to be killed for their purpose. Many of them listened and did as they were told, killing emptily, corrupting lights and stealing hearts. They grew tired of how long it was taking, their leader grew irritated and they came up with a plan. They used a little boy with a key to unlock the hearts for them, always egging him on and cowering from the boss. But the child grew weary and fought against their plans. One by one they were consumed by the darkness which they all used. They were all lost, each one unfeeling, pushing out fake emotions of regret and pain and loss, until only their leader stood. And stand he did. Tall and menacing, empty eyes staring down at the child and his friend. He wanted the hearts, the child's heart, anything to bring back his own. So they fought, and it was brutal and painful and in the end, he was still empty. He too was lost and the children consumed and the world was blank. But light has a funny way of persevering and the children were released, hearts shining as brightly as the inner walls of a castle now empty, hanging desolately in the sky of a sunless city with wet streets.
