Cult of Kaiju

Raleigh and Gipsy Danger had canceled the apocalypse. But not everyone was happy about it. In the whirlwind of chaos that followed the closing of the breach, this was understandably forgotten.

There was mourning for those who had sacrificed their lives: Stacker, Chuck, the Wei Tang Triplets, and the Kaidanovskys. The nations they had represented held elaborate memorial services, numerous politicians who had previously voted to cut the funding for the Jaeger program were the first to take the stage to loudly proclaim that the fallen were heroes, that they would be missed, and their sacrifice unprecedented. Not one of them brought up the subject of the funding cuts. That had all been swept under the rug.

At the same time, relief that the planet would no longer be terrorized by giant killing machines swept the globe. Celebrations were held almost continuously for months. Nations congratulated each other and vows of permanent alliances were exchanged. There was nothing like an apocalypse to bring the world together. Especially when said apocalypse didn't even happen.

Life could resume. Rebuilding could commence. Countless new bridges and highways were named after the heroes, and the boom of the newborn children were christened with the names of the fallen rangers and their Jaegers. People crept back to the Pacific shorelines, even the tainted ones. The posture of the world went from fear and grim acceptance, to revitalized determination. Humans had been granted a reprieve, and most of them were grateful for the second chance.

And they had forgot those who had based the meaning of their existence on the Kaiju, who were rather put out by the closing of the Breach.

The heads of the Cult of Kaiju watched furiously as their flock drifted back to their pre-Kaiju lives, knowing that the prestige and the wealth they enjoyed while the threat of the imminent apocalypse which motivated people to try to save their souls faded. The heads of Cults of Kaiju were very upset at this turn of events, and were increasingly desperate. Being exposed as frauds, they vowed to exact their revenge.

One of them, a particularly deluded individual, devised a plan to re-open the Breach and bring back the Kaiju, and their lost glory. He approached the others, who, in their desperation and greed, jumped on the plan, because not only would it bring back the Kaiju, it would make a certain individual pay for what they had lost.

They had laid their hate, their blame and their vengeance squarely on the shoulders of Raleigh Beckett, who had not given them a first thought, let alone a second thought. Because when you save the world, it is forgivable to think that everyone in the world would be grateful, or at least happy about it. It was no secret that it had Raleigh went alone through the Breach with Gipsy Danger. He had personally done the deed.

And he for that, he would pay, not only by helping them bring back the Kaiju, but by being the first sacrifice to the Kaiju when they came back.
