Author's Note: This isn't exactly AU, but just something I thought would fit into the series. Enjoy!

"Toby and I were together you know?" CJ was looking into her empty glass as if more would magically appear.

"Really?" Donna squeaked out, not completely surprised.

"Oh yeah, for years." She trailed off slightly as Donna's eyes widened but continued. "It took us a while but in the end it was perfect. I loved him so much, heck I still do. I don't think I've ever loved anyone else."

"Why did he marry Andi then?" this fact didn't make sense to Donna.

"When I moved to California, we couldn't keep up with each other so we broke it off. He got her pregnant and decided to be stoic." CJ paused before deciding to embark on what she had been holding back on as Donna looked curious for more. "She miscarried and it was a shitty marriage. He was miserable the whole time and wanted out; she wouldn't divorce him because it looked bad for a new congresswoman. The whole time he wouldn't touch me because he wanted to be faithful, to do it right no matter how much it pained us to be apart. Then the little bitch cheated on him and although he said he never really loved her, she broke a part of him I could never fix. It broke my heart to see him marry someone else but I think it broke my heart even more to watch his wife have no fucking clue about who he was and what he believed in."

"Is that why he keeps proposing now? To be 'stoic' now that she's pregnant?"

"Oh it sounds so much worse coming from your sweet mouth." CJ laughed bitterly.

"Are you okay with it?" softer tones responded.

"No, but he thinks it's what right and I need to let him do this, he'll be damned if he lets someone control his failures like this."

"Have you guys ever reconciled, you know since the divorce?"

"We're together on and off, but mostly on. We've been together since the campaign really, since he brought me out from California."

"How come none of us have realised?" Donna asked in amazement.

"We're fucking good at hiding it, although most of our behaviour's no different behind closed doors. Minus the sex." She grinned slyly over the top of the new glass the bartender had pushed her way.

Donna choked on her wine. "Wow. But how did he end up sleeping with Andi again?"

"It was only one night. We'd separated over Simon and got into a huge fight not long after his death. He stormed out, I'm guessing wound up with her, then came back the next day wanting me back."

"Then she found out she was pregnant and everything changed?"

"Yeah. I had to let him. I mean his dedication to doing what his moral compass dictates is what makes him."

"Do you think she'll say yes?"

"No. She's playing him along and she loves it. She was always bitter because she knew his heart wasn't in it, so she'll be lapping up all the attention she can get. Yet she doesn't know he calls me every night and tells me how much he misses me, how much he loves me." CJ smirked with glowing eyes.

"You two are so dysfunctional." Donna smiled, unable to muster up much else.

"I think we'll end up together eventually. It'll take a while sure, but we're meant to be." She grimaced at the cliché and she knew Toby would berate her if present, even if he knew it too.

"It all makes sense now though. The whole rollercoaster of emotions you guys have; the way he watches you, with that dark admiration; your constant flirting." Donna was proud that she knew of her friends' relationship, the unknown missing piece to the fucked up puzzle of the Bartlet Adminstration.
