The Upside of Normal
Alex was a normal guy.
He went to college on a basketball scholarship and planned on using his status in school to get him to the places he wanted to be. He wasn't popular, on the contrary, no one understood the greatness implied with his name upon first meeting him.
He worked late nights at a bar on Fifth Street, using his elemental charm to woo the drunken women into throwing large tips his way.
His life, along with everyone's around him, was on the upside of normal.
Until he met Leah Clearwater.
She walked into the bar with her coat close around her body. She didn't need the warmth but she knew it would have looked odd to see a woman without some sort of jacket thrown over her body in the middle of December.
He didn't see her at first, not until she ordered a bottle of Heineken.
When he looked into her eyes, his world seemed to crumble around them. The feeling left only her, in that room, with that bottle of beer pressed against her lips. It was as if everything he had thought was important - his scholarship, his GPA, his grandma Fern in Boise - was nothing but a whisper of what it once had been.
In it's place was the woman in front of him, and when he asked her name, he still didn't understand why.
