We have a secret,
If you care to know it.
The ever-changing sea is vast,
And it is lonely.
The whispering waves,
Caressing our rocks,
Ceaselessly taunt us
With words as sharp as swords.
"You have nothing.
You have no one."
And yet there are days,
When the wind blows strong,
And the sea reflects the sky
In a perfect never ending blue,
That, dominating the horizon,
White sails unfurl
In a storm-battered ship.
We lift our voices in song,
Releasing a haunting melody,
Seductive to man.
We call them to us.
We need them with us.
And they head towards us,
And we shall no longer be alone.
But Poseidon is a hostile host.
The earth-shaker welcome no visitors
Into his kingdom of waves.
So he sends them to another,
For Hades welcomes all
Into his kingdom of the damned.
There visitors meet open arms
And never have to leave
Death's frigid embrace.
And we are left with the vast sea
And we are lonely.
