I was sitting on Xigbar's target platform, watching down below, as Roxas spoke to my deaf ears. Well: deaf to him, anyway.
Instead, the most beautiful tunes from the Hall of Empty Melodies floated up and graced my ears, and a blissfully oblivious smile passed over my lips, as the blond Key of Destiny continued to jabber angrily at me.
I wanted to turn round and tell him to stow it, but ever since he'd arrived he'd been this little clingy leach-thing, and had bailed me out of enough situations that I had to at least spare him my opinion. He seemed annoyed. Big whup.
My eyes traced the Melodious Nocturne's steps, as he strode a funny dance around the hall, playing a gimmicky unrecognised tune. The mulleted musician had caught my eye ever since he'd joined, barely a month after myself. I'd barely even spoken to him, and hadn't once imagined telling him how I felt. Until now. I made a mental note to ask him if he wanted to get some sea salt ice cream later… There, I'd tell him.
"Axel, are you even listening to me?"
"Of course I am, Rox!"
"Then I'm sorry."
My mind was blank. What had he done? I couldn't ask him without hurting his feelings, so remained schtum.
The city that couldn't even pretend it existed was dark. It was raining, and thunder rumbled through the air, drowning out even the persistently loud melodies of Demyx at the castle.
I stood beneath a building with a balcony to avoid getting wet. I hated the rain.
Roxas stood near me to me, but with his back in my direction. I had to ask, once more.
"Your mind's made up?"
He stopped in his tracks. "Why did the Keyblade choose me? I have to know."
He just didn't understand. "Betray them, and they'll destroy you!"
"No-one would miss me."
He walked off. I said nothing.
I'd had the power to save him. But I didn't use it.
Or want to.
We sat on the clock tower. Demyx and I, our legs dangling over the edge, and licking our ice creams. Demyx had some news, and I let the hyperactive child tell his big news that he'd 'daringly' overheard from Xemnas.
"I heard Xemnas tell Saix that DiZ captured Roxas! Do you think he'll be alright?"
My ice cream tumbled to the Town all those feet below.
But this didn't correspond with the icy lump, searing down my throat.
